Brits forced to flee Benidorm beach after thick fog shrouds entire shore

Brits forced to flee Benidorm beach after thick fog shrouds entire shore

It was like a scene out of The Mist... if you know, you know

Going on holiday is all about the sun, sandy beaches and cocktails, but some Brits were in for a rude awakening during a recent trip to Benidorm.

We’ve all been enjoying this lovely sun in the UK, and those abroad should be doing the same.

However, holidaymakers were forced to flee the beach when a thick fog rolled in and overtook half of the sand, ruining it for everyone.

Those who bore witness soon legged it, probably thinking it was a scene right out of The Mist, but there was a more sensible explanation.

Tracy Stocks and her husband were among the holiday goers at the Benidorm beach on Sunday, 5 May.

The 43-year-old was sunbathing without a care in the world but when the mist rocked up, she simply assumed a fire had broken out in a nearby apartment.

That’s when she caught it all on camera.

She quickly shared the video footage to Facebook and captioned it, 'what happened' to see if anyone could help clear things up.

The video shows grey mist covering the beach and making it hard to see in front of you.

A lot of commenters decided that this could be something like thick 'sea mist', due to the temperature difference between land and water.

Others took it as an opportunity to joke about how the UK is getting some great sunshine with one writing, 'it's lovely and sunny in Derby'.

Tracy, from Lincoln, said: "It was really strange. We were just sunbathing and we saw what we thought was smoke coming from the new town. It circled round us and we were in the middle of it.

"Everyone was running off the beach. I didn't know if it was smoke or whatever. I thought one of the apartments was on fire.

"We watched it for a bit. We couldn't see any of the buildings either side or the rocks. It was just pure mist. We asked the locals what it was. Someone told us it was sea mist.

"Everybody had their cameras out and even the local restaurants were coming outside and got their phones out to see what was going on. Quite a lot of us ran off.

"It's something you'd expect back in the UK but not in Benidorm. It was very bizarre."

The 43-year-old is a frequent guest in Benidorm and found the ordeal 'ironic' that the UK is having a sunnier time than she is.

Tracy said: "My friends and family were telling us how hot it is in the UK. It was crackers. Normally when we're away it's raining in England. It was quite frustrating really. But we have the beach right near us at least.

"I sent photos to friends and everyone was asking what it was. We don't get that in Lincoln.

"I put the pictures up to see if anybody knew what it was. It was a bit different."
