A spokesperson for Gogglebox said on X: "George was part of the Gogglebox family for eight series alongside his mum Linda and step-dad Pete.

"Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Linda, and George's family and friends at this very sad time.

"The family have asked for privacy."

Police have since stated that the beloved TV personality died this morning (27 March) following a suspected accidental fall from a height in Shoebury, Essex.

They confirmed that the incident occurred at around 10am today, as he sustained injuries from the impact.

Ambulances and air ambulances rushed the scene, but unfortunately, Gilbey did not survive the severity of his injuries.

An Essex Police statement read: "We received a report of an incident at Campfield Road in Shoebury at around 10am this morning, during which a man who was working at height had fallen and sustained an injury.

"The ambulance service including air ambulance were in attendance. Sadly, the man died at the scene.

"We will continue liaising with partners including the Health and Safety Executive.

"A cordon remains in place at the scene."

Several TV and film stars have been quick to send heartfelt tributes to the British TV personality.

Ricci Guarnaccio, a fellow TV personality who entered the Big Brother house with George in 2014, posted: "Breaks my [heart] but George Gilbey you are well and truly going to be missed my friend.

"Always lit up the room, cared for others & the memories we made I'll cherish for ever brother. From CBB to speaking to you last week, I'm going to hugely miss you ma boiii! Love you GG."

Other celebrities and friends wrote kind words for Gilbey, described by some as 'one in a million'.

Daniella Westbrook, best known for her role on EastEnders, wrote: "Gone too soon. Good night, my darling friend George. I'm absolutely gutted xxx."

The 40-year-old's death comes three years after the death of his step-dad, Pete McGarry, following a short-term with bowel cancer.

McGarry stayed on Gogglebox alongside his wife after Gilbey's departure, until 2020.
