Primark bosses have confirmed the business will reopen all of its English stores on 15 June, after the government gave non-essential businesses permission to start trading again.

The owner of the chain Associated British Foods (ABF) said it expects to have 281 stores open by that date, including 112 sites that have already been opened over Europe and the United States.

Although the store is waiting on further guidance for its stores in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, hoping to open them in 'late June'.

A statement from the Primark owner said: "As European governments have begun to ease restrictions on clothing retailing we have been able to reopen stores.

"Safety has been our highest priority in our detailed preparations to welcome our customers and employees back to stores. We are following government safety advice in all markets."

Primark stores that are already open include those in Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Slovenia, France, the US, Portugal and Spain.

Primark added: "Importantly, we will apply the valuable experience gained from more than 100 stores which are already open as we open the remainder of our estate, including stores across the UK.

"Social distancing protocols, hand sanitiser stations, perspex screens at tills and additional cleaning of high frequency touch points in the store are among the measures we are implementing.

"These measures are designed to safeguard the health and wellbeing of everyone in store and to instil confidence in the store environment. Feedback from customers and employees in those markets where the stores are open has been positive."

The budget fast fashion store, which sells homeware as well as clothing, has been losing £650 million ($806m) a month while it's been closed during the coronavirus pandemic.

From 15 June, betting shops, phone shops, and food stores will be allowed to reopen.

The UK government announced the news on 25 May, hoping to kick-start the economy as it looks to come out of lockdown.

Though some are already allowed to open, the full list of shops to reopen next month includes:

  • food retailers
  • chemists
  • hardware/homeware stores
  • fashion shops
  • charity shops
  • betting shops and arcades
  • tailors, dress fitters and fashion designers
  • car dealerships
  • auction houses
  • antique stores
  • retail art galleries
  • photography studios
  • gift shops and retail spaces in theatres, museums, libraries, heritage sites and tourism sites
  • mobile phone stores
  • indoor and outdoor markets
  • craft fairs
  • similar types of retail

However, it's bad news for your lockdown hairdo - because of the risk of infection being higher than in other settings, hairdressers, nail bars, beauty salons and the hospitality sector will remain closed.
