The best item on the McDonald’s menu might be up for debate – we’ve all got our own preferences.
But surely, we can all agree if you’re ordering chips with your meal or perhaps Chicken Selects or McNuggets, then you’re going to get a sauce. Well, with any food you want to dunk. And likely, more than one packet.
Maybe you rock up at the drive through and ask them to ‘just throw in a load of sauce’ or to ‘give me a couple of ketchups’.

However, sometimes, it seems like the McDonald’s staff aren’t on the same wavelength as either they’ll give you just one sauce or, even worse, ask you to pay for them.
And on that point, McDonald’s provides an explanation for why some restaurants charge for the likes of ketchup and some don’t on its site: “The reason is that a significant proportion of our restaurants are owned by franchisees who set their own prices - some charge for extra sauces if they are not part of a meal option.”
But a supposed staff member from the fast-food chain explained the ‘real reason’ behind why you always have to ask for free sauces at Maccies.

And it’s all down to margins it seems.
“We're not told not to give out 'too much sauce' but instead we are told that each specific purchase has a defined sauce packet given for free,” they explained.
The apparent employee then detailed this policy as they continued: “For example, getting a four or six-pack nugget you are allocated one free sauce packet. However, at our own discretion, we can give an extra free packet if they got a six-pack nugget." And that continues with the larger portions.

“If you got a 10 pack nugget, you are provided two for free automatically and another for free at our discretion, if the customer asks. If you got a 20 pack, you get three, and another extra at our own discretion,” they said.
"For every 20 or so packets we save, we don't have to order another box of them. So, we have more on hand longer and less risk of running out.”
They then said that they do then charge extra for more to ‘prevent abuse’ as it’s ‘fair to assume that two packets of sauce is enough for a sick-pack’.
"So, as cost control, we charge for extra to prevent abuse. But, realistically we really don't mind giving extra if it makes you happy, just that the price of an item isn't just accounting for the ingredients and materials."

Or, you know, if you’re taking your Maccies home, you could just use your own sauce.
