Medical expert answers the question of whether or not your penis actually shrinks as you age

Yes, one of life's big worries

Ah, life’s great questions… What were we put on this Earth for? What came first, the chicken or the egg? Will a Freddo ever stop going up in price?

And of course, does your penis actually shrink as you age?

OK, well, we’re obviously not all asking that one but it’s one we seem to have got an answer for as a medical expert has soothed the worried cries of ‘most men’.

Because, yeah, there might be bigger things to worry about but that’s not stopped people from fretting over how big they are.

It’s not technically possible for a d**k to drastically reduce in size but there are different factors affecting a person’s erection result.

Urologist and director of male infertility at the University of Southern California, Dr Mary Samplaski, warned how a bloke’s age and lifestyle choices may have an impact on their penis’ ability to maintain a ‘consistent level of tumescence’.

That’s basically the medical term for when something is swollen - especially as a result of ‘sexual excitement’. So yeah, it pretty much means hard in this case.

Dr Samplaski told Men’s Health: “There’s not really a medical tool for measuring penis shrinkage. What we do know is that smoking and age can cause a decline in testosterone production.”

It’s already been found that smoking can cause a damage to blood vessels and halt on proper blood flow, having a consequence on erections.

The doctor also added how conditions like cardiac disease and diabetes, or thyroid issues, can cause changes in erectile strength.

“Exercise is a natural means of achieving a rise in a man’s testosterone. Testosterone is important for the health and wellbeing of the male functional organs,” Dr Samplaski added, explaining how obesity can also cause issues.

The expert said that essentially fat contains an enzyme which converts testosterone into oestrogen and this of course can cause shrinkage and erectile issues.

But don’t start panicking lads, it is worth remembering that experts reassure that penis shrinkage really is a very rare occurrence.

It was previously found that the average penis size across the world has seen a mega 24 percent increase over just 29 years.

And scientists are a little worried as experts believe that sedentary lifestyles and hormone-disrupting substances are thought to play a role in this increase.

See, size isn’t everything lads.
