Jenna Ortega has spoken about the shocking reason behind deleting her X account.

The 21-year-old is one of the next big things in the film and TV industry, and recently caused waves on social media for her part in the latest Sabrina Carpenter music video for 'Taste', where she shared a kiss with the 'Espresso' star.

Ortega has been in the spotlight since her breakthrough as a teenager on Jane the Virgin and Disney Channel's Stuck in the Middle - but fame at such a young age comes a lot of unique problems.

The Wednesday star recently sat down for an interview with the New York Times prior to the anticipated release of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which is due to come out next month.

She opened up about growing up in the industry while trying to find who she was as a young woman was challenging, and touched on a few sensitive subjects along the way.

Ortega spoke about one of her upcoming projects titled Klara and the Sun, a story adapted from the 2021 novel of the same name and centres around Artificial Intelligence (AI) in a dystopian future.

Speaking about the controversial technological advancement, she said: “I hate AI. I mean, here’s the thing: AI could be used for incredible things.

"I think I saw something the other day where they were saying that artificial intelligence was able to detect breast cancer four years before it progressed. That’s beautiful. Let’s keep it to that."

The Scream actor then spoke about her negative experience with AI while having an X account as a teenager, adding: "Did I like being 14 and making a Twitter account because I was supposed to and seeing dirty edited content of me as a child? No. It’s terrifying. It’s corrupt. It’s wrong.”

When asked more about it, she said that the first ever DM she opened at the age of 12 was 'an unsolicited photo of a man’s genitals', which she took as a sign of 'what was to come.'

“I used to have that Twitter account and I was told that, ‘Oh, you got to do it, you got to build your image,’" she explained.

"I ended up deleting it about two, three years ago because the influx after the show had come out — these absurd images and photos, and I already was in a confused state that I just deleted it.”

Further backing her decision, the star stated: “It was disgusting, and it made me feel bad. It made me feel uncomfortable.

"Anyway, that’s why I deleted it, because I couldn’t say anything without seeing something like that.

"So one day I just woke up, and I thought, ‘Oh, I don’t need this anymore.’ So I dropped it.”

Ortega isn't the only celebrity to have become a victim of deepfake pornography, as AI images of Taylor Swift began circulating the internet earlier this year - leading people to call the images 'insane' and 'terrifying'.

Laws surrounding AI are currently developing, however, as the use of the technology continues to grow.

In the UK, the government announced their intention to 'crack down' on sexually explicit 'deepfakes', stating in an April press release that under new legislation those who create and share such images without consent face a criminal record and an 'unlimited fine'.

They could also potentially face jail if the image is circulated more widely.
