Shocking amount farmers earn per year as Jeremy Clarkson starts new 24/7 text support service

Shocking amount farmers earn per year as Jeremy Clarkson starts new 24/7 text support service

Clarkson's Farm viewers will know just how difficult farming can be

Jeremy Clarkson's Hawkstone has announced a partnership with 24/7 text messaging service Shout to help farmers out with their mental health.

The Clarkson's Farm star has shone a light on how difficult it is to be a farmer on his Amazon Prime Video show.

With a fourth season confirmed, there's no doubt that Clarkson has a soft spot for the farming community and wants to help out when he can.

He previously revealed that farmers would receive a free pint at his new £1 million pub, which will serve his Hawkstone Lager.

"I also wanted a room I could turn into a clubhouse, which, on wet weekdays, would provide a mental health forum and a free pint for the nation’s farmers," he previously wrote in his column for The Sunday Times.

Now, according to farming.co.uk, 95 percent of farmers under 40 identify poor mental health as a serious issue in their line of work.

Poor weather conditions, price fluctuations and isolation are some of the factors that contribute to mental health risks among farmers, research suggests.

Meanwhile, it has been revealed that the average farmer earns just £28,000 a year, and that would be in a good year, says UK Talent.

Research from The Farm Safety Foundation also shows that farmers often work 10-hour days, and 15 percent work a 14 or 15-hour day, while many rarely, or never, take a day off.

Bear in mind the average wage in the UK is £35,828, according to Forbes.

That's why Clarkson's Hawkstone is partnering up with mental health charity Shout to help farmers who are struggling.

"Farming can be a struggle so if you are finding it a bit tough at the moment, text HAWKSTONE to 85258 and you’ll get free confidential support from a very experienced team of people," the former Top Gear presenter said.

"It could be worth sending a message, it’s better than suffering in silence."

Kaleb Cooper added: “Farming is an incredibly hard job and there are statistics out there to show that mental health challenges in farming have risen in recent years.

“Some people don’t like talking about their problems face-to-face or find it difficult to open up to someone they know, so we have teamed up with Shout to allow farmers to send a simple text and get the support they need.”

Shout offers a 24/7 lifeline of free and confidential text support from trained professionals who are aware of the unique challenges farmers face.
