Leonardo DiCaprio slammed over 'disrespectful' act as actor was spotted in Fiji

Leonardo DiCaprio slammed over 'disrespectful' act as actor was spotted in Fiji

The actor was greeted as he walked out of his hotel

Leonardo DiCaprio has been criticised as 'disrespectful' after footage of him ignoring a greeting in Fiji was posted online.

The famous actor was spotted leaving a hotel in Nadi, a city on Fiji's main island, decked out in black clothes, a hat, and sunglasses.

As he headed through the hotel lobby there was a large crowd of people singing and clapping, while pretty much everyone else not joining in with the song and dance appeared to be filming DiCaprio on their phones.

The Once Upon A Time In Hollywood star then took out his phone and appeared to be taking a call as he went through the lobby and got into a waiting car.

According to news.com.au, the singing and dancing is a 'cultural tribute' performed by the hotel staff to greet visitors to Fiji.

DiCaprio appeared to make little to no sign of acknowledgement towards anyone as he headed for his car, and this has resulted in some people criticising the actor.

There were people who commented that he 'totally ignored the welcoming effort', while others told the Fijians 'don't waste your energy' and criticised the actor as 'so disrespectful'.

Someone else who clearly felt aggrieved at this situation commented that DiCaprio 'SHOULD'VE ACKNOWLEDGED THE FIJI WELCOMING PARTY', writing in all caps to fully convey their feeling on the situation.

"You have to acknowledge this, or go home," declared a commenter who said they'd visited Fiji years ago and been made to feel very welcome there.

Others just said 'hats off to the welcoming team for the effort' as they really had put a lot of gusto into it.

However, others said that people should 'just let him be', since DiCaprio couldn't even walk through a hotel lobby without being filmed by pretty much everyone there not participating in the greeting.

DiCaprio has had a long and successful career in showbusiness, though back when he first started out, he was told that people wouldn't want to hire someone called Leonardo DiCaprio as that name was 'too ethnic'.

Instead, he was advised to pick a different name, specifically 'Lenny Williams', which fortunately for everyone didn't come to pass.

His name 'Leonardo' seems to have come from the famous painter and inventor Leonardo da Vinci, as DiCaprio says that his parents were on their honeymoon in Florence looking at a da Vinci painting when baby Leo started 'kicking furiously'.

DiCaprio's dad decided that their family name wasn't too far from da Vinci, and so their son would be called Leonardo.
