Millie Bobby Brown has explained why her accent keeps changing, addressing the backlash she has referred to as ‘accent-gate’.
The 21-year-old British actor, most known for her roles in Stranger Things, Enola Holmes, and Damsel, spoke out in a new podcast appearance.
Bobby Brown, who recently revealed that isn’t even her real name, spoke out on the SmartLess podcast while promoting her upcoming Netflix movie The Electric State.

The actor has been unafraid in recent weeks to speak out about criticism she has been receiving, previously hitting out at journalists and media personalities who had been critical of her appearance.
Now, however, she's hit out at people commenting on her changing accent.
She said of the backlash around it on the podcast appearance: “That was such a huge thing for a minute.

“I actually call it the ‘accent-gate’ because it’s so frustrating because that was everywhere.
“Like for a second, everyone was talking about my accent, and they had a real problem about it.”
She went on to explain why her accent has been ‘changing’, and the reason makes perfect sense.
She said: “I was like, ‘Guys, I’m married to an American.’”

Bobby Brown married Jake Bongiovi, the son of Bon Jovi singer John Bongiovi, in May 2024 in a ceremony officiated by her Stranger Things co-star Matthew Modine.
She went on to say that, since she is often around her husband’s family, who are American, her accent changes.
She said: “When I’m around his family, I immediately go into, like, an American accent. But then I was just in England, and then the second I hear my mom and dad’s accent, I just go right back.”

“You want me to play these characters, but you expect me not to morph into people.
“What I hear is what I do. It’s all part of it.”
The actor has lived a multicultural life already despite being only 21, having been born in Spain, grown up in England, and then spent much of her childhood on the set of Stranger Things in America.

Her accent was addressed previously in an appearance on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, in which she told the SNL alumnus: “I can’t help that when I’m around my fiancé, or when I’m with people like Jimmy Fallon, who have a very American accent, I wanna replicate it.”
The actor's newest film, The Electric State, is set to release this Friday on Netflix.
Despite the all star cast, including herself, Chris Pratt, and Stanley Tucci, and the massive £245 million budget, reviews have been less than stellar.
The movie opened to a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 22% with The Independent's one star review calling the film 'completely incoherent'.
