Stephen Fry addressed age gap between himself and husband as he explained why they haven't been seen in years

Stephen Fry tied the knot with husband Elliott Spencer back in 2015

Stephen Fry has explained why he's rarely spotted out and about with his much younger husband Elliott Spencer.

The author and TV presenter tied the knot with Spencer back in 2015, when the pair were 27 and 57 respectively, in an intimate ceremony just two weeks after Fry had proposed to the comedian — and the pair have remained married since.

Little is known about the couple's relationship. Fry and Spencer haven't been photographed publicly together for six years, however they are still very much together — with Fry recently sharing a rare tribute to his 37-year-old husband to mark their wedding anniversary earlier this year.

"Ten happy years to the day since we were joined in marriage," Fry wrote in a now deleted Instagram post (via MailOnline). "I’m a lucky man."

So why are the pair seldom seen out together? Well if you ask Fry, there's a very simple reason.

"[We] don't go to Hollywood parties much," Fry explained during a previous appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show, recalling a conversation he'd had with a Hollywood agent on the subject (via PEOPLE).

Revealing they have a decisively more low-key evening routine, the 67-year-old added: "We have an early supper, watch Jeopardy! and go to bed."

Which might explain how the pair were able to find love despite the three decades of age which separate them.

The pair have also repeatedly defended their relationship from criticism about their difference in age, with Fry joking to Ross: "There is an age difference and I keep forgetting which way round it is but I think he’s younger than me ... but I don’t mind."

This isn't the first time which Fry has addressed the elephant in the room when it comes to his age gap with Spencer either, with the Fry and Laurie star also acknowledging that his husband likely had 'a lot more' life left than him.

"We met at a friend’s house and I knew pretty much straight away that this was someone I wanted to spend, what I considered, the rest of my life with," he explained.

"Whether he thought the same because he’s got rather a lot more [life to go than me]."

Spencer has also brushed off any criticism regarding his marriage to Fry, telling reporters during the 2015 BAFTAs that he's not interested in outside opinions on his relationship.

"I don’t care what people think," he said. "Stephen is the love of my life, the light of my life."
