Tom Hanks’ daughter reveals actor had to ‘track them down’ as she opens up on turbulent childhood

Elizabeth Ann 'E.A.' Hanks' mother had primary custody of her and her brother

Tom Hanks' daughter has opened up on her turbulent childhood and revealed that her famous father once had to track her and her brother down.

The beloved American actor, known for his roles in Big and Cast Away to name but a few, had two children with his first wife Susan Dillingham - also known as Samantha Lewes - but after their split in 1987, she received primary custody for daughter Elizabeth Anne (E.A) and Colin.

Hanks certainly has a sharp mind when it comes to filmmaking, after one gamble on Forrest Gump earned the actor millions, but keeping track of his oldest children became a tricky task after Dillingham spontaneously decided to move her kids to Los Angeles from California without informing their father.

E.A, who is now 42, has now written in detail about her childhood in her upcoming memoir, titled The 10: A Memoir of Family And The Open Road.

While the book will mainly revolve around her mother, who sadly passed away in 2002 from lung cancer, there are of course references to the Toy Story star.

In one section, she reveals that her father had to 'track' them down after realising they were no longer at school.

She writes: “My dad came to pick us up from school and we’re not there. And it turns out we haven't been there for two weeks and he has to track us down.”

The former actress, who incidentally appeared alongside her father in Forrest Gump as a girl on the school bus, also went into detail with the abuse she suffered at the hands of her mother, and how she ended up being moved away from her father.

The excerpt reads: “As the years went on, the backyard became so full of dog s**t that you couldn’t walk around it, the house stank of smoke. The fridge was bare or full of expired food more often than not, and my mother spent more and more time in her big four-poster bed, poring over the Bible.

“One night, her emotional violence became physical violence, and in the aftermath I moved to Los Angeles, right smack in the middle of the seventh grade.”

She also writes about how Hanks and Dillingham's divorce had a big impact on her childhood, with her only permitted to visit her father on the weekends and at summers, where she would spend time with her new half-brothers Chet and Truman, who were born after Hanks' marriage to Rita Wilson.

"Eventually a divorce agreement was settled, and I would visit my dad and stepmother (and soon enough my younger half brothers) on the weekends and during summers," she explained.

"But from 5 to 14, years filled with confusion, violence, deprivation, and love, I was a Sacramento girl.

"I lived in a white house with columns, a backyard with a pool, and a bedroom with pictures of horses plastered on every wall."

The 10: A Memoir of Family and the Open Road” by E.A. Hanks is out April 8.
