A corrupted antihero trying to clear his name and reputation, he first appeared in DC comics back in 1945, but this is his first portrayal on the big screen.

The movie sees Johnson's character go up against the Justice Society of America, which is made up in the film by Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Quinetessa Swindell as Cyclone, and Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate.

Not only has it been a huge hit with fans, but the movie has also proved to be the biggest box office weekend of Johnson's career.

And now, taking to Twitter, 'The Rock' has addressed the 'phenomenal' audience score Black Adam managed to generate on Rotten Tomatoes.

The movie scored 90 percent on the infamous review site, compared to a slightly less exciting 39 percent score from film critics.

“This phenomenal 90% AUDIENCE SCORE for #BlackAdam is so gratifying for so many reasons,” he wrote.

“15 years. THANK YOU for all so much for all the love and support. In the end, the only thing that matters to me is sending the people home happy. And that’s what I’ll always fight for.”

In a second tweet, he added: “A huge THANK YOU!!!! to the fans for our amazing 90% Audience Score for #BlackAdam.

“Highest audience score for a DC theatrical film since Dark Knight. As always, the fans matter most and we’re always committed to deliver for them. So make sure you stay til the end credits…”

Johnson has said the movie is 'the beginning of 'the new era of the DC Universe' and says he 'looks forwarding to building [it] from here'.

In a comment responding to one tweet praising the movie, Johnson explained that the character was totally different to roles he had played in the past, and thanked the movie's director for '[helping] tremendously'.

"Was a departure for me from characters I’ve played in the past. Our director, Jaume Collet-Serra helped me tremendously and a big advocate. Look forward to building out the DCEU from here," he wrote.
