The producer of I Am Legend 2 has made a major admission confirming a theory about the original movie’s ending.
Oh yeah, in case you missed it, a sequel to the iconic 2007 film is in the works. Michael B. Jordan is signed up to appear in it with Will Smith also returning, but fans have been a little confused over that.
In the original action sci-fi film, we see the Men in Black star’s character Robert Neville attempting to find a cure for the disease wiping out the human race.

And of course, Neville ends up sacrificing himself in order to save mankind.
However, the DVD extras for I Am Legend famously included an alternate ending where Smith’s character gives up on his research and instead goes off to search for a survivors’ colony.
So, fans have previously speculated that’s how the sequel will work. And, well, it seems they may have been right.

Producer and writer Akiva Goldsman appeared on Collider’s Producers on Producing panel at San Diego Comic-Con yesterday (25 July) where he made a tease about the new film.
“We’re sequelising the alternative cut,” he confirmed. “Where Will lives and things don’t go well for humanity.”
The producer added: “The world returns in a way that is kind of spectacular – an exciting playground for all of us – not your father’s I Am Legend.”

Goldsman previously spoke to Deadline about the new film, saying that it will ‘trace back to the original [Richard] Matheson book’.
"This [sequel] will start a few decades later than the first,” he said. “I’m obsessed with The Last of Us, where we see the world just post-apocalypse but also after a 20-30-year lapse.

"You see how the earth reclaims the world, and there’s something beautiful in the question of, as man steps away from being the primary tenant, what happens?
"That will be especially visual in New York. I don’t know if they’ll climb up to the Empire State building, but the possibilities are endless."
And earlier this year, Jordan told People Magazine that he was working with Smith on the story.

"We're still working on the script and getting that up to par," the star explained. "It doesn't have a release date or anything like that. I'm not sure exactly where we're going to be filming that one, but I'm really excited to get in front of the camera with him.
“Being somebody that I've looked up to for a really long time, to be able to work with Will is something I'm really looking forward to. I'm really excited."
