Coming off the success of Barbie, it seems all our favourite childhood toys are being converted into movies, and Monopoly’s up next.
With Lionsgate set to buy eOne from Hasbro, it means the entertainment company can begin production on the long-awaited Monopoly film.
The $500 million deal between Lionsgate and Hasbro is expected to close later this year, giving Lionsgate access to over 6,500 titles from eOne.

These titles include everything from TV series like Yellowjacks, Naked and Afraid and The Rookie, as well as intellectual properties such as Peppa Pig, Transformers, My Little Pony and Monopoly.
In a statement on Hasbro’s website CEO Chris Cocks said: “Lionsgate’s management team is experienced in entertainment and adept at driving value, and we’re glad to have found such a good home for our eOne film & TV business.
“We look forward to partnering with them, especially on a movie adaptation of Monopoly.”

The idea of a Monopoly movie is not anything new.
In fact, there have been talks to develop the movie since 2015.
Back in January 2019, there were reports that Kevin Hart was set to star in a Monopoly-based movie, however, that project never managed to pass Go.
Similarly, other big names such as Ridley Scott and Tim Story have been connected with the project at one point or another, but no director for the movie has been confirmed.

With this new Lionsgate deal, fans are hopeful that it means the Monopoly movie is one step closer to hitting our screens.
Now that they have a deal with Lionsgate, Hasbro has plans to develop many of its other properties into films too.
Some of these projects include a Transformer sequel, a GI Joe action movie and a Power Rangers film.

“Hasbro will continue to develop and produce entertainment based on the rich vault of Hasbro-owned brands,” said Cocks.
“We will also bring to life new original ideas designed to fuel all areas of Hasbro’s blueprint including toys, publishing, gaming, licensed consumer products, and location-based entertainment.”
There’s even apparently a Play-Doh movie in the works.
As the Monopoly movie is still in development, there is no release date, though hopefully now with this deal, the movie’s production begins soon.
