School of Rock director would agree to sequel if condition is met

School of Rock director would agree to sequel if condition is met

Richard Linklater has revealed the one condition he would need to be met to join Jack Black for a sequel to the classic comedy

School of Rock fans rejoice – we have an update on a potential sequel.

Following Jack Black admitting he'd ‘never say never’ to a return to the role, the director of the classic film has broken his silence on a sequel – and it’s good news.

Richard Linklater directed the original, and is currently on a press tour for his new film Hit Man, coming to Netflix next Friday (7 June).

Speaking exclusively to LADbible, he gave us the scoop on a follow-up to the 2003 comedy, and stated there was one thing he'd need in order to return.

This comes after Black’s admission that he wouldn’t rule out a return to the role.

We all probably think we’re the only ones unable to get ‘You’re not Hardcore’ or any of the other bangers from School of Rock out our head – but it seems that Black is also unable to get the film out his mind.

When asked by UNILAD about returning to the role, the comedy legend had a typically brilliant response: “Never say never. I'd love to rock again."

Richard Linklater is no stranger to a sequel himself.

While most of his films are standalones, the director produced three films in the incredible Before trilogy starring Ethan Hawke.

When asked about Black being willing to come back to the role, Linklater laughed, before saying: “It’s so funny, people will always say stuff like ‘oh Ethan Hawke said in an interview he would be up for another Before film'.”

Strap in School of Rock fans for this next bit, we promise there’s good news on the other side.

He then proceeded to confirm that ‘there are no discussions’ of a potential sequel.

Here’s the good news, when asked if he’d return, the director said: “Sure, it has been a long time. There was talk of it years ago but I’d love to work with Jack again. But there’s got to be a reason. There’s got to be something.

“Don’t do it unless there’s an idea, the reason we did two Befores is there was a good idea screaming out, there’s something to express about this.”

After a brief discussion on sequels being brought back and what makes a good one, Top Gun: Maverick was obviously brought up.

He went on to say: “Yeah, you’ve got to be incorporating that time, it resonates, it means something to people.

“There’s another type of sequel I usually call the ‘victory lap sequel’. They’re usually out pretty quick, they’re economic, and everyone knows it.

“We’re way beyond that, so why would you do it unless there’s something specific to tell.

“There’s always a good idea to be had.”

While we're all hyped for a potential sequel, I think we can agree it's great to see they aren't willing to bring the film back without a good reason.
