Superman boss revealed why Henry Cavill was replaced as Clark Kent as new trailer drops

With just two months until the new Superman film is set to release, many fans will be asking why the franchise ditched Henry Cavill to go with David Corenswet instead.

Cavill played Clark Kent in five different films, Man of Steel, Batman vs Superman, Black Adam, Justice League, and Zach Snyder’s Justice League, the most of any modern Superman.

For the newest film, which just released a new trailer today giving us an even closer look at the brand new Man of Steel Corenswet, Cavill had at one time been heavily rumoured to return. This even culminated in Cavill announcing on Instagram in October 2022 that he would be returning to the role.

But just two months later, it came out that another actor was set to take on the role and Cavill had to post announcing that he wasn’t actually going to be coming back.

Why was Henry Cavill replaced as Clark Kent?

James Gunn, the director of Superman who is also the co-CEO of DC Studios, disputes the idea that Cavill was ever cast in the film.

He told journalists while announcing DC’s upcoming slate of films: “We didn't fire Henry, Henry was never cast.

"For me, it's about, who do I want to cast as Superman, and who do the filmmakers we have want to cast? And for me, for this story, it isn't Henry.

“I like Henry, I think he's a great guy. I think he's getting [messed] around by a lot of people, including the former regime at this company. But this Superman is not Henry, for a number of reasons."

Cavill had stated in December of 2022 that he had been told to announce his return ‘by the studio’, and that it was therefore tough to hear that someone else would be getting the gig.

He went on to add: “The changing of the guard is something that happens.

“I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”

New trailer for David Corenswet’s Superman

With Cavill no longer wearing the cape the honour falls to Corenswet, with the following new trailer dropping.

The film will feature a far larger roster of heroes than Cavill’s instalments, kick starting James Gunn’s rebooted DC movie Universe, called the DCU.

Joining Corenswet in the cast is Nicholas Hoult (playing Lex Luthor), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner aka Green Lantern), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), Milly Alcock (Supergirl), and Edi Gathegi (Mr Terrific).

Superman releases July 11.
