People think gloomy horror The Mist has 'most messed up ending' leaving people 'feeling sick'

One viewer said the movie's ending was a 'sucker punch'

Horror fans say Stephen King’s The Mist has the 'most messed up ending' which left some viewers ‘feeling sick’.

With Halloween just around the corner, you may be in the market for a scary flick to watch and if you’ve already worked your way through Netflix’s recent horror offerings, such as Run Rabbit Run and Evil Dead Rise - then you might want to give 2007’s The Mist a try.

It hardly needs saying, but there are some major spoilers ahead.

The movie is based on King's novella of the same name and centres on a quiet Maine town that is hit with a powerful thunderstorm before a mysterious thick mist rolls in, trapping several locals inside a grocery store.

But - with this particular story being penned by horror master King - it’s not long before things get creepy and terrifying creatures begin to reveal them from the mist, destroying anything in their path.

The Mist has an impressive 7.1 on IMDB and a similarly decent 73 percent on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, where it also holds a 65 percent audience score.

In a post on Reddit about the ‘most messed up’ scary movie endings, fans were quick to point out The Mist, with one person claiming it was a ‘sucker punch’ to the gut and other claiming it was a ‘damn near perfect horror movie’.

The ending sees the main character take the lives of his young son and fellow survivors when they thought all hope was lost, only for him to run out of bullets for himself.

This harrowing moment is then followed by the mist clearing as a vanguard of a US Army armored column appear, who have began the process of exterminating the creatures and finally restoring order.

Heart-wrenching, we know.

Responding to the post, one viewer commented: “That is definitely one of the bleakest ones I've seen. Just leaves you absolutely empty.”

A second wrote: “Genuinely left me feeling like someone sucker punched me right in the gut after watching that. It made me feel sick and it was absolutely brilliant for the balls it had to do what it did.”

Someone else said: “I’m actually watching the ending as I type this. I’m not an emotional guy, but third time and it still nearly brings me to tears.

"I watch a lot of horror and this is one of only three I have rated a 10 on IMDB. Damn near perfect horror movie, to me.”

Another fan said: “It’s probably one of my absolute favourite horror movies. A bit corny, but wow, just such a great horror flick. Was really enjoying it, then the ending hit and bam. Cemented as one of my favourites. Just absolutely nails the bleak hopelessness theme.”

High praise indeed. The movie’s ending differs from the one King wrote in the original story - with horror-lovers claiming the film’s version beats the original.
