In the latest, and possibly most bizarre, stunt from the man known for his fearless approach to wacky challenges, George Clarke has announced that he’s been tasked by Virgin Media with assembling an all-walrus rowing team for this year’s Great River Race through the Thames.
The challenge has recently gone viral thanks to a video George made called “Walruses Assemble.”
The Great River Race is London’s very own river marathon, a thrilling but arduous 21.6-mile boat race that stretches from Millwall in the East to Richmond in the West, passing under the city’s iconic bridges. Open to all skill levels, it offers a challenge for both seasoned rowers and adventurous newcomers alike. But it’s certainly something that’s going to be a real fun test dressed up as a Walrus.
Speaking in his now-viral video, George called on the public for help, specifically anyone with experience in rivers, rowing, or, most importantly, walruses.
"Look, you know racing across Sri Lanka in a Tuk Tuk was one thing, but this? This is a different kettle of fish entirely - or should I say walrus!"
"I have no idea how I'm going to pull this off, but if anyone can do it, it’s me...and maybe some experts."
Virgin Media's stunt has sparked a frenzy of interest on social media, and the challenge is a direct nod to “Walrus Whizzer”, the campaign they’ve launched (which tells the unexpected story of a maverick walrus discovering how smooth life can be with a helping hand) to celebrate the fact that they’ve been awarded Best Broadband Experience*
What better way to celebrate the freedom that better broadband brings ay?
Rumours are swirling that George has already enlisted top rowing coaches, animal behaviourists, and a few costume designers to ensure his race is nothing but smooth sailing. He’s even been spotted at riverside pubs asking locals for tips on how to handle currents.
The event is set to take place soon, and George's walrus crew is expected to make quite the splash, whether the event is smooth sailing or not!
Stay tuned as the odyssey unfolds, and if you happen to know the secret to a walrus win, you might just get a call to take part.
