James Cameron says no one will be able to predict where the Avatar sequel plot will go

The legendary director believes he has come up with a truly mind blowing storyline for Avatar: The Way of Water.

James Cameron reckons he has come up with the most outrageous storyline for the Avatar sequel that no one will see it coming.

The legendary director is gearing up for a lengthy press tour ahead of Avatar: The Way of Water dropping in cinemas around the world in mid-December.

He's teasing that moviegoers won't have a clue where he will take the plot so you can stop trying to guess.

Cameron told IGN: "I guarantee you, you won’t be able to predict it

“What people hate the most is to go and see a movie and say ‘oh… predictable.’

"This is not predictable, I don’t think. I defy anybody to predict where this story goes.”

You heard the man.

There have been some plot details released about the movie that is coming more than a decade after the original.

Cameron said the film won't be set just after the events that happened in the first and a lot has changed.

“We follow [Jake and Neytiri] forward in time, 15 years to where they have a family of pre-teens and teenagers," Cameron said.

"More of a family dynamic. It’s not a Hallmark, Disney family dynamic.

"It’s a very dysfunctional family dynamic, but ultimately there’s a core there that they all draw their strength from.

"I think that’s the thing that’s fundamentally different from the first one.”

The only synopsis 20th Century Studios has given for the sequel is something very similar to Cameron's concept.

It said that Avatar: The Way of Water 'begins to tell the story of the Sully family, the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure'.

Fans who were lucky enough to go to the D23 Expo were given a sneak peek at several clips from the film.

Cameron shared footage of the sequel at the Disney fan event, which contained scenes of a showdown between Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and Jake Sully (Sam Worthington).

They were fighting about whether to leave their home because of all the imposing threats. However, Neytiri once again reminds the Na'vi that this is their ‘home’.

Another scene also featured a confrontation between the Na'vi, as one group member was caught hanging out with an outsider.

Fans were also shown sequences of the Na'vi swimming on Pandora.

Even though we're still a few months away from seeing the Avatar sequel, James Cameron has revealed production has already kicked off for Avatar 4.

Avatar: The Way of Water will premiere in cinemas on December 14.
