Controversial psychologist Jordan Peterson has lashed out at director and actor Olivia Wilde after she revealed the villain of her upcoming film Don’t Worry Darling was based on him.

The film debuts on Monday at the Venice International Film Festival with Chris Pine starring as the charismatic yet menacing Frank, the man behind the utopian experimental community where things aren't exactly as they seem.

In a recent interview with the National Post, the 38-year-old actor turned director revealed that she based Victory's baddie on the controversial Canadian commentator.

"We based that character on this insane man, Jordan Peterson, who is this pseudo-intellectual hero to the incel community," she said, as per the National Post.

She then described incels as 'disenfranchised, mostly white men, who believe they are entitled to sex from women'.

Wilde added that incels 'believe that society has now robbed them' and that 'feminism is working against nature'

"But this guy Jordan Peterson is someone that legitimises certain aspects of their movement because he’s a former professor, he’s an author, he wears a suit, so they feel like this is a real philosophy that should be taken seriously."

Some harsh words there. And, yeah. It seems like Peterson didn't exactly appreciate being rinsed in the press.

He fired back at Wilde while pointing out that having Star Trek's Chris Pine play a role modelled on him isn't actually all that bad.

"[Pine] has a reputation as quite an attractive man … so that could be worse,” he said, as per a statement to the National Post.

In a jibe aimed at Pine - and Wilde, indirectly - he told the Canadian national newspaper that if he's going to get mocked, at least Pine should look spiffy in fancy suits such similar to his own.

"I also hope that Chris Pine at least does the sartorial splendour of my very formal public wardrobe justice as he pillories me in the latest bit of propaganda disseminated by the woke, self-righteous bores and bullies who now dominate Hollywood, and who insist that the production of such tripe," Peterson added, as per a statement to the National Post.

He then addressed Wilde's criticism of the type of people that read his books.

Peterson said that men who are 'unsuccessful enough in the dating market ... might be regarded in this context as the kind of derogatory slur [that] compassionate progressives [like Wilde] claim to eschew.'

He added that he was 'pleased' that some have found 'solace' in his teachings.
