British musician Damon Albarn has copped criticism from Taylor Swift, her friends and her fans for comments he made about songwriting.
In a conversation with The LA Times, the Blur and Gorillaz frontman said the 'Shake It Off' singer doesn't write her own songs.
When Albarn was corrected that she is the sole writer for a lot of her hits and also co-writes others tracks, he double downed.
"That doesn't count. I know what co-writing is," he said. "Co-writing is very different to writing. I'm not hating on anybody, I'm just saying there's a big difference between a songwriter and a songwriter who co-writes.
"Doesn't mean that the outcome can't be really great."
He claimed Ella Fitzgerald 'never wrote a song in her life' and yet she was still great. On the other hand, the musician praised Billie Eilish and her producer brother Finneas.
"I'm more attracted to that than to Taylor Swift. It's just darker - less endlessly upbeat. Way more minor and odd. I think she's exceptional," he concluded.
It didn't take long for Taylor to respond to the put down and has absolutely savaged him.
"@DamonAlbarn I was such a big fan of yours until I saw this," she wrote on Twitter.
"I write ALL of my own songs. Your hot take is completely false and SO damaging. You don't have to like my songs but it's really f**ked up to try and discredit my writing. WOW.
"PS I wrote this tweet all by myself in case you were wondering."
Swift's longtime collaborator, Jack Antonoff, also waded into the discussion and told Albarn to shove his comments where the sun don't shine.
"I've never met damon albarn and he's never been to my studio but apparently he knows more than the rest of us about all those songs taylor writes and brings in," he said.
"if you were there ... cool ... go off. if not ... maybe .... shut the f**k up?"
Albarn responded to Swift's tweet and claimed he's the victim of clickbait.
"I totally agree with you," he said. "i had a conversation about songwriting and sadly it was reduced to clickbait. I apologise unreservedly and unconditionally. The last thing I would want to do is discredit your songwriting. I hope you understand."
To be fair, the tweet that Taylor responded to did reduce Albarn's conversation about songwriting to a very short sentence.
Fans have praised Taylor for speaking out about her craft and for putting Albarn in his place.
