Netflix's Monster series, which started with serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, has been renewed for two more seasons.

As a result of the success of Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, the streaming platform has revealed it will be going ahead with two more seasons of Monster - turning it into an anthology series.

Despite the series' controversy, just 12 days after its release, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story amassed nearly over 300 million hours of views and became one of Netflix's most streamed shows.

In becoming one of the ninth most watched English television series of all time, it's no wonder Netflix were so keen to renew it.

However, the two further seasons of Monster won't continue tracking the horrific murders of Milwaukee Monster Jeffrey Dahmer.

Instead, they will focus on 'other monstrous figures who have impacted society'.

While the streaming platform hasn't yet confirmed which figures the new seasons will feature, some true crime documentary fans have speculated whether they could include the likes of Ted Bundy or John Wayne Gacy.

Despite the popularity of the show reflected in its views, the news of a further two seasons has received a mixed response.

Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story viewers have flocked to social media with some having criticised the move.

"How are they still not understanding that just because you can do something DOESN’T mean you should," one user said.

Another wrote: "BRO WHAT??? WHY DON'T JUST LEAVE IT AT SEASON 1?"

A third commented: "This show was an awful idea from the start."

"They shouldn’t be glorifying mass murders. Not a coincidence that none of the victims families wanted anything to do with this," a final said.

Netflix's announcement has garnered a mixed response from viewers.

Netflix hasn't only renewed its Monster series, but also The Watcher, which similarly to Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, is also a true crime series.

In a statement, head of global television at Netflix, Bela Bajaria, said: "Audiences can’t take their eyes off Monster and The Watcher. The creative team of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan on Monster along with Eric Newman on The Watcher are masterful storytellers who captivated audiences all over the world.

"The back-to-back force of these two series is due to Ryan’s distinct original voice which created cultural sensations, and we are thrilled to continue telling stories in the Monster and Watcher universes."

Dates for the renewed seasons of Monster and The Watcher have yet to be announced.
