Think of an Adam Sandler film and you probably think comedy, whether that's Happy Gilmore, Big Daddy or the more recent Murder Mystery.

But the New York comedian is a man of many talents and has, on occasion, dabbled in more serious roles through the likes of Uncut Gems and Hustle, both of which saw Sandler receive critical acclaim.

And now, his most recent serious role is going down a storm with audiences - so much so it has scored a perfect 100 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating with the general population.

The 57-year-old dad-of-two has entered the world of science fiction in a new role that's sees him jetting off in to space.

The film debuted at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival on 21 February before being released into cinemas on 22 February for a limited run.

It'll then head over to Netflix at the beginning of March.

Sandler stars alongside Carey Mulligan, Paul Dano, and Kunal Nayyar in the 107 minute sci-fi drama.

One reviewer posted: "Incredible film. Extremely well acted, consistently engaging, and memorable. Thoroughly enjoyed. Thought Adam Sandler had a stellar performance. Production value was top notch."

A second said: "Had the opportunity to watch this at the Berlin premiere.

"Absolutely loved the musical score, the Sandler performance and the production.

"I disagree with some of the negative critical remarks about it being slow, I loved the gradual build."

A third wrote: "I thought it was a terrific movie. Adam Sandler continues to impress as a dramatic actor. Carey Mulligan is always good. Isabella Rossellini was perfectly cast as the mission director.

"The story has a lot of interesting elements, isolation, selfishness, love and redemption. Very well told and executed."

The film is Spaceman, and stars Sandler as astronaut Jakub Prochazka, who is sent to the edge of the solar system to collect mysterious ancient dust.

While making the voyage, he finds his life back on Earth falling apart and turns to the one voice who can help him try and salvage it all; that voice being a creature from the beginning of time lurking in the shadows of his ship.

You can watch the trailer below:

Mulligan stars as Sandler's on-screen wife, Lenka Prochazka, while Dano is the voice of Hanus, the creature hiding in the depths of Sandler's vessel.

The film is based off of Jaroslav Kalfar's 2017 sci-fi novel, Spaceman of Bohemia, with work on the film beginning in October 2020.

Johan Renck directs, with his previous work including the critically-acclaimed mini-series Chernobyl, winning him an Emmy Award back in 2019.

Viewers have loved it ahead of its arrival on Netflix, while critics have been a little less favourable.

But at an average of 67 percent, it's scoring solidly among those whose job it is to watch movies.

Spaceman comes to Netflix in March.

Maria Lattia, of Film Stories, writes: "There is a great tenderness to Spaceman. Renck directs Spaceman with the same clarity that he brought to Chernobyl, but Spaceman soars highest when it explores the many avenues of humanity."

And Rodrigo Perez of The Playlist, said: "Imagine a movie akin to a sad David Bowie song about an astronaut drifting alone into the dark abyss of space, contemplating his life, his lost love, and more.

"That’s Swedish filmmaker Johan Renck’s Spaceman in a nutshell."

Spaceman is released to Netflix on 1 March.
