'Best show on Netflix’ has viewers discovering true story as Pentagon bizarrely slams series

It comes as part of Pete Hegseth’s continued rebrand of the US Department of Defence as the ‘Department of War’

A show dubbed the ‘best on Netflix’ has left many viewers discovering the true story behind it in part due to the Pentagon’s bizarre decision to slam the series.

Netflix’s recent TV shows have received mixed ratings, with its new season of Monster focused on Ed Gein being panned critically and its similarly successful House of Guinness also splitting critics.

A show that received far less hype than both Monster and House of Guinness however sits with a higher Rotten Tomatoes score than them both, and is higher on the worldwide Netflix charts.

Focused on a closeted young gay man who joins the US Marines in the time immediately leading up to the implementation of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, Boots has been called the best show on Netflix, as well as being slammed by the Pentagon.

Why did the Pentagon slam Netflix series Boots?

The Pentagon hit out at Netflix as part of Pete Hegseth’s continued rebrand of the US Department of Defence as the ‘Department of War’.

Hesgeth has said in speeches that the Department of Defence became the ‘woke department’ and he would be putting an end to that.

A press secretary for the Pentagon released the following statement, saying: “Under president Trump and secretary [Pete] Hegseth, the US military is getting back to restoring the warrior ethos.

“Our standards across the board are elite, uniform, and sex neutral because the weight of a rucksack or a human being doesn’t care if you’re a man, a woman, gay, or straight.

“We will not compromise our standards to satisfy an ideological agenda, unlike Netflix whose leadership consistently produces and feeds woke garbage to their audience and children.”

For anyone who watched the show, this will be an obviously bizarre criticism from Hesgeth and the Pentagon.

Fans point out Boots is based on the true story of a marine

One viewer took to Twitter to mock the statement, saying: “The concept of a show that is based on the story of a real person being ‘woke garbage’.”

Another replied saying: “Woke garbage and it’s biographical and lowkey supportive of the military industrial complex like [the show] actually could be SO much woker.”

Boots is based on a memoir called The Pink Marine, an autobiography by Greg Cope White about his time serving as a secretly gay US Marine.

Regardless of the criticism from the Pentagon, the series has been a hit with fans and critics, sitting at 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and 8/10 on IMDb.

One Reddit thread discussing the show saw one viewer say: “Boots is the best show on Netflix right now.

“If you haven't watched it you absolutely need to. I laughed, I cried, I got angry, it's absolutely brilliant.

“I stuck it on with no knowledge of what it was, I thought I was just in for a modern take on stripes. Instead, I got treated to the most compelling show I've watched in years!”
