Warning: Spoilers for Fool Me Once ahead

Author Harlan Coben has addressed the character plot hole from Fool Me Once as all viewers were left asking same question.

Provocative crime thriller Fool Me Once feels like Netflix's most-talked-about series at the moment after it dropped on the platform on New Year's Day.

It follows grieving wife Maya Stern (Michelle Keegan) who is trying to come to terms with the murder of her husband, Joe Burkett (Richard Armitage).

After the funeral, Maya installs a nanny cam to keep an eye on her two-year-old daughter Lily (Thea Taylor-Morgan).

However, when inspecting the footage, the mum is shocked to see her husband who was filmed on camera in the house, playing with Lily.

Netflix says Keegan's character 'uncovers a deadly conspiracy that stretches deep into the past.'

As a reminder, here's a major spoiler: In the end, we learn that Maya was actually the one behind Joe's death, after discovering he had murdered her sister (and that he was prepared to murder her, too).

However, after watching all eight episodes, viewers were left baffled by one plot hole.

Throughout the series, people were left wondering why Shane (Emmet J. Scanlan) - Maya's friend and fellow military officer - kept putting trackers on Maya's car.

He was also seen standing outside her house, looking very suspicious.

One wrote on Reddit: "What was Shane’s character for? I get that he was her friend from the military but was it him that was stalking her at her house and tracking her car etc?

"Was he obsessed with her? In love with her? He was under developed and I was convinced he was dodgy as soon as he came on the screen but he turned out to be a nice guy and a loyal friend to Maya."

Another said: "Just a bit confused with Shane?"

Well, taking to X (Twitter) was the writer of the novel - which the series was based on - who has finally explained Shane's role.

Harlan Coben himself explained: "Spoiler: You’re military police. Your best friend suffers PTSD. She is taking medication, lying to you, lost two close family members to murders, has you test a bullet — and says she’s seeing her dead husband.

"You might want to (track) keep an eye on her and her little girl…"

Makes sense, as one viewer commented: "Secrets safe with me buddy. Just don’t place a tracker on my car. Awesome work on the show."

Actor Emmet J. Scanlan has got in on the action and tweeted: "Spoiler. The guy who plays that guy is starring in a future Coben masterpiece. This is so top secret even Harlan doesn’t know about it. So please, keep it to yourself."

If all the spoilers haven't ruined it for you, all eight episodes of Fool Me Once are available to watch on Netflix now.
