We all hear the phrase that you can binge a Netflix series in a day, but very rarely will you actually want to.
Well, if you stick on this show I hope you have the next seven hours free, because this is one that you will genuinely want to finish in one sitting.
It is a ‘disturbing’ series with a slow build, created by Haunting of Hill House and Fall of the House of Usher visionary Mike Flanagan.

The Netflix show follows a small but deeply religious island town in New England being beset by creepy supernatural happenings – it is imminently creepy and deeply engaging.
Available to stream on Netflix, it is called Midnight Mass and we are not overhyping it – as shown by the numerous fans obsessed with it and the mass critical acclaim.
Released in 2021, it received an 87% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, with Meagan Navarro saying:

“This type of horror leaves a mark. It's as though Flanagan became such a quick study of what makes Stephen King's small-town horror tales resonate and is now primed to outpace the master.”
Thankfully, this isn’t a thought-experiment type show beloved by critics and routinely marked boring by fans – as horror fans are in love with this show.
Posting on the Netflix Bangers Facebook group, one fan called the show a ‘10/10’ stating they would definitely recommend it.

A public review of the show on IMDb also said: “I am generally not a fan of religion mixed in with my horror but this was extremely well written. Maybe more of a thought provoking somewhat disturbing drama than horror.
“It was definitely worth the time”.
Available on Netflix now, the project is just one of Flanagan’s many, most of which are beloved across the board.
In addition to The House of Usher and Hill House, the creative has also made The Haunting of Bly Manor, Doctor Sleep, and Gerald’s Game.

He often uses the same cast for most of his project with this being the case once again for Midnight Mass.
Zach Gilford of Friday Night Lights fame stars in the show as a recovering alcoholic, whilst Flanagan’s own wife Kate Siegel stars opposite him.
If you still aren’t convinced – Sian Cain’s ending to their review of the show for The Guardian should do the job:

“Some don’t enjoy horror because the genre can sometimes be an emotional vacuum; when underdeveloped characters are hard to care for, it can be hard to mourn when they’re killed off.
“Tragedy brews slowly on the Crock Pot, as we come to know its residents, so that when violence and utter bleakness does finally arrive, there is still beauty and hope too.
“I bawled my eyes out at the end; I have had friends who don’t normally like horror do the same. So maybe I will never watch this wonderful, harrowing show again – but Midnight Mass will stay with me for ever.”
Get ready to cry, from both sadness and absolute fear at the scariest bits of the show.
