NTAs LIVE: Winners and highlights from the 27th National Television Awards

Peaky Blinders star recognised for Best Drama Performance

After his incredible stint as Peaky Blinders' Tommy Shelby, Cillian Murphy has taken home the National Television Award for best drama performance.

Murphy left fans stunned as he rounded out his storyline on the hit BBC drama earlier this year, but fans could expect to see him again as the show's creator, Steven Knight, has assured that a film is on the way.

Lenny Henry is recognised with a lifetime achievement award

The actor and comedian was praised for his years in the business with a segment featuring interview and clips from his time on screen.

He made his on-screen debut in the 1970s, and went on to receive a knighthood in 2015. Unlike the categories where members of the public vote for their winner, Henry's recognition was awarded by a panel.

Gogglebox is awarded the NTA for Factual Entertainment

Though it feels like a comedy most of the time, Gogglebox is actually factual - it's the facts of what Brits look and sound like when watching TV.

A number of the Channel 4 show cast members headed up the stairs to collect their award, which they managed to secure after going up against nominees including Clarkson’s Farm, Paul O’Grady: For the Love of Dogs and Great British Bake Off.



The NTAs recognises the ongoing war in Ukraine

The National Television Awards has dedicated a segment of the awards ceremony to recognising the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which began when Russian president Vladimir Putin sent troops over the border in February.

Ukraine succeeded in winning Eurovision earlier this year, though the UK will host the musical event next year in the country's honour.

After Life crowned best comedy award of the year

Ricky Gervais' heartfelt series might leave us in tears half the time, but it's got enough comedy in there to make up for it.

After three series released on Netflix, Gervais wrapped up After Life this year and described the win as a 'genuine surprise'.

He kept his speech simple, saying: "Thank you to the amazing cast and crew, thank you to Netflix and most of all thank you to everyone who voted."

Peaky Blinders has won the award for Best Returning Drama.

It was a tough category, with nominees including Bridgerton, Call the Midwife and The Split, but Cillian Murphy and the rest of the gang have taken the win.

Unfortunately Murphy didn't take to the stage to accept the award, but creator Steven Knight took the opportunity to thank the British fans who made the show what it is and promised the Peaky Blinders film would be coming soon.

The cast and crew are set to start filming in Spring, with Knight hopeful that they'll create something that will bring fans together.

Gemma Owen appears to have struggled with her envelope

Gemma appeared on stage alongside her dad to present the award for Serial Drama Performance, but after the nominations were announced she looked to be struggling to open the envelope.

It looks like she had to get some instructions on the process, and naturally eagle-eyed viewers didn't miss the scene unfold.

Mark Charnock was ultimately named the winner of the award over nominees Gillian Wright, Paige Sandhu and Rose Ayling-Ellis.

King Charles III has made an appearance

The King of England appeared at the NTAs in a recorded a video message to commend Emmerdale on reaching 50 years on screen.

It's certainly an honour, though not everyone is convinced that the King spends his evenings kicking back with a soap opera. You never know, though...

Martin Lewis named winner of the 'Expert' category

Jay Blades, Kaleb Cooper and Sir David Attenborough were all in with a chance of taking home the NTA for their expertise in various areas, but it was the Money Saving Expert that proved the people's favourite tonight.

Lewis has been offering constant advice amid the ongoing cost of living crisis, so it's fitting that all of his efforts are recognised with the award.

The presenter described the year as 'pretty terrible' financially and argued that we need 'somebody to get a grip on the economy', but said he would leave that for his show next week. For tonight, "this nerd is going to party".

Trigger Point named as Best Drama

There's been a lot of good drama over the last year, with Heartstopper, Trigger Point, Time and This Is Going To Hurt all given a chance to take home an NTA.

The award ultimately went to Trigger Point starring Vicky McClure and Adrian Lester; a drama which left viewers constantly on edge with the story of the lives of London bomb disposal experts.

McClure expressed her love for the fans as she accepted the award, though we might see her again as she's also nominated for Best Drama Performance

That's right, there's an ad break already. Thankfully, there's a lot more to look forward to with awards for best Drama Performance, Comedy Show and Talent Show judge, so grab some biscuits and stay tuned...

I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here takes the win for the Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award. 

Nominees in the category included Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, Taskmaster and The Graham Norton Show, but obviously people just can't get enough of watching celebrities go head-to-head with bugs, because it was I'm A Celeb which was named the winner.

Ant and Dec unfortunately aren't at the event to accept the award, but the stage was still flooded with members of the crew who came to collect it.

Sam Ryder has officially kicked off the 27th National Television Awards

The Eurovision star has taken to the stage at the NTAs to perform his epic track 'Space Man' before host Joel Dommett makes an appearance to start handing out tonight's awards.

Phillip Schofield is in the building

Like Holly, Phil entered the arena alone before making his way over to his table. Dressed in a black suit jacket and trousers, he could be seen giving thumbs-up to cheering members of the crowd.

Phil could be in with a chance of winning an award tonight in the Daytime category for This Morning, with other nominees including Loose Women, The Chase and The Repair Shop.

Holly Willoughby arrives without co-host Phillip Schofield

The This Morning presenter walked the red carpet without Phil, despite the pair having a chance to win an award together for their weekday chat show.

Holly and Phil recently came under fire as they were accused of 'skipping' the queue to see the Queen's coffin, though ITV insisted they went to Westminster Hall for the purposes of reporting on the event.

Martin Lewis is among the stars arriving at tonight's event

We're here at the NTAs as dozens of famous faces walk the red carpet and make their way into the OVO Arena Wembley ahead of tonight's ceremony, with Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis among those making an appearance.

He's not offered us any advice on how to save money while watching the awards show - at least not yet - but he was spotted alongside his co-presenter Angellica Bell as they arrived for the 27th annual NTAs, joining the soap actors, TV presenters and reality TV stars hoping to be recognised with an award.
