What happened at the end of The Sinner Season 4?
The principal storyline of Season 4 was deciphering the mystery of Percy Muldoon (Alice Kremelberg) disappearing from a quiet village in Maine. Detective Ambrose happens to be in the village trying to put the pieces together of a previous case, but doesn’t miss the opportunity to take on another case in Muldoon.
After a brief encounter, Ambrose calls the police after he believes he saw Muldoon falling off a cliff edge and dying. However, due to his alcoholism and being new to the village, the authorities don’t take his accusations seriously.
Muldoon’s family, however, seem to have some secrets of their own. Namely, the illegal smuggling ring which they own beside their fishing company.
Nonetheless, the detective is tormented by Muldoon’s passing, and she encourages him to find out the truth about what happened to her. He suspects that the Lam family could have something to do with her death, as they own a rival fishing company.
Suspects also include the Muldoon family, with the likes of her grandmother Meg, father Sean and uncle Colin as top contenders, not forgetting about her ex-boyfriend Brandon, until he was assassinated.
It turns out that all along, Percy was in the dark when it came to her family’s human-trafficking endeavours, but was starting to suspect something before her death. She attempted to go to the police, but ended up speaking to officer Josh, who actually has a role in running the illegal ring. Of course, he doesn’t take her accusations seriously and takes her back home to her family.
In the season finale, it’s revealed that Percy previously shot and killed the oldest son of the rival Lam family, Bo, during a fight between him and her father. In an attempt to keep the murder a secret, the Muldoons gave the rival family fishing permits and their very own fishing island, Crescent Island, where they could lay their son to rest.
The Lam family kept the murder hidden so well, that even Bo’s brother CJ thought he ran back to Hong Kong and no longer wanted anything to do with his family.
It turned out that Percy was haunted by the murder she committed years prior, and took her own life. At the end, the detective was seen standing where Percy fell and spoke to her. This suggested that although he himself had been dealing with his own suicidal thoughts and depression, he realised suicide is not the way out.
