American can’t get over her boyfriend’s English slang as northerners say ‘it makes perfect sense’

American can’t get over her boyfriend’s English slang as northerners say ‘it makes perfect sense’

The videos are going viral over on TikTok

A TikTok couple have gone viral after posting a video all about accents, showing off quite the cultural divide given that one is from the USA and the other - Northern England.

The UK is one of the most diverse places in the world when it comes to accents, with incredibly small distances often resulting in vastly different ways of speaking.

Go 35 miles from Liverpool to Manchester and it is like two different countries speaking different languages; the same goes for the 95 miles between Leeds and Newcastle.

The huge range in accent and dialect means that local slang is very much a thing embraced by each region or city - and something that doesn't half give you a headache if you're not from the area or have never visited.

It's something that has been quite the learning curve for one couple on TikTok, documenting the cultural differences between them.

Tay is from Arizona in the US while her boyfriend Alex hails from Preston in the heart of Lancashire.

And one video in particular has got viewers of their content fixated, concerning one piece of Preston slang that he's tried to teach her.

Speaking to Alex, Tay says: "Preston slang 101, what did you just say?

"You said 'c't moon'. What does 'c't moon' mean?"

Explaining the slang, Alex says: "It means the moon is out. Like, 'look at the moon over there'.

"We say 'look at the moon', shorten it to 'look at moon', and then if you want to really shorten it you go, 'c't moon there'.

"Everyone should know what that means. C't moon int sky."

And fans of their TikTok videos were loving it, with one saying: "As a northerner I love seeing Americans hear a northern English accent instead of the stereotypical southern."

Another said: "I had no idea what you were on about until Alex said it in his accent, then it made perfect sense. I'm from South Yorkshire so very similar."

While a third wrote: "That's a hearty Lancashire accent right there and I wholeheartedly endorse this."

And a fourth brought up their own experience of the language divide between the USA and UK, adding: "I remember saying telly to some Americans and they were like 'what’s a telly?' - I was shook."

The couple followed this up with another video where Tay sits down to learn Preston slang. We're talking 'ey up cocker', 'ahreet cha', 'ta-rah', and 'stop yer mytherin'.

As someone who went to university in Preston and worked there for seven years, all the chatter is flooding back.

Viewers were more than impressed at her ability to understand what the slang meant at first go, with one commenting: "Marry this girl and give her a North West passport."

Another told her to watch a Peter Kay stand up gig to see if she could keep up with the Bolton legend.
