Ant explained real reason he was 'angry' with Dean McCullough in 'unprofessional' moment on I'm A Celeb

Ant set the record straight during Dean's I'm A Celeb exit interview

Presenter Ant McPartlin has revealed the real reason he was 'angry' with I'm A Celeb star Dean McCullough as he admitted to being 'harsh'.

BBC Radio 1 DJ Dean became the second campmate to be voted out of the jungle on Sunday night.

During his time Down Under, Dean took part in a whopping seven Bushtucker Trials which put the 32-year-old up against all manner of creepy crawlies including bugs and spiders.

But it was a trial involving sand which drew the ire of co-host Ant.

After Dean quit a trial in which he was placed in a sarcophagus filling with sand, many viewers noted that the host wasn't looking all too pleased with him.

But Ant himself admitted it was a bit 'unprofessional', confessing to Sam Thompson that he 'wasn't happy' with his behaviour during ITV2 spin-off programme I'm A Celebrity: Unpacked.

"Oh god. I told you not to talk to me about it Sam," Ant responded when the former Made in Chelsea cast member decided to broach the topic. "My annoyance came across on screen and it was quite unprofessional and I'm not happy about it."

But during Dean's exit interview, Ant set the record straight on why he was 'angry' with the star.

During Dean's exit interview, Ant opened up on why he'd been a bit frosty towards the contestant.

It all began when Dean commented: "You were so harsh! What was goin on?"

Ant candidly responded: "Let me explain why, Dean. I was very angry with you for calling I'm a Celebrity."

Dec then chipped in: "But that was because we felt that the trial was doable. And you panicked over the sand in the sarcophagus."

Ant continued: "You could have done the trial. Then that tough love kind of got you through."

It wasn't all tough love though, as he found time to congratulate Dean on sticking it out through later challenges.

He added: "By the time you got on the flying challenge, you were brilliant, absolutely brilliant. See, I knew you could do it.

"I knew you could do it and you did it in the end. So that's the good thing.

"You can leave here now with your head held high. If you'd only done a couple of trials, and called I'm A Celebrity, you'd be forever disappointed."

Dean agreed with this assessment and thanked Ant for encouraging him to improve.

The trial in which Dean screamed 'I'm a Celebrity, get me out of here' was called Sinister Sarcophagus.

It involved the star being locked inside a sarcophagus in which his head was in a separate compartment from his body.

While bugs and other critters filled the space surrounding his head, sand poured into the section that contained the rest of his body.

He would have to endure this all while answering trivia questions.

By the time he quit the trial, he'd only secured two stars.

I'm A Celebrity airs each night at 9.00pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
