What do HBO's upcoming adaptation of Harry Potter and Stephen Graham's gut-wrenching series Adolescence have in common?
Absolutely nothing, and yet the two are being heavily compared online. Here's why.
Yesterday (25 March), HBO dropped the first trailer for the new adaptation JK Rowling of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the first season in its ambitious 10-year plan to reboot the iconic wizarding franchise for a TV audience.
The trailer gives us our first look at Dominic McLaughlin in action as the Boy Who Lived, as well as teasing several major departures from the original books and film series.

However, that's not all the differences which have been picked up on by super fans who spent last night dissecting the trailer frame by frame.
Let's see if you can spot the differences below:
Anyone who's recently revisited the Daniel Radcliffe films or is particularly clued up on post-production in filmmaking will have noticed that the teaser looks a little... dull.
Perhaps it's the fact that we've all grown up since our first exposure to the Wizarding World and no longer experience the same whimsy as we did in childhood.
Or maybe it's because Harry Potter is the latest franchise to fall victim to the low contrast colour grading used in most modern films and TV shows.
This is where the comparison to Adolescence comes in.
"They really made Adolescence Harry Potter," read one unimpressed viewer on X, while a second agreed: "The first few scenes in the Harry Potter trailer looked like a new season of Adolescence."
"This whole trailer feels less magical than like the entirety of the pre existing Harry Potter films, sorry to say but this is just weird lol," a third fan penned, going on to note how the low contrast of the trailer made it feel 'fake'.

"Hagrid looks like a businessman wearing a hagrid cosplay and nothing looks good lol, it looks fake and lacking any colour," the user added.
A fourth added: "It’s missing that little spark. Maybe I'm just too nostalgic for the color [sic] grading of the 2001 film."
The colour grading wasn't the only glaring difference either, with fans also attributing the films' magical feel to the work of composer John Williams.

Williams scored the first three films of the franchise, with 'Hedwig's Theme' being reused as a motif throughout the rest of the movies.
'Hedwig's Theme', of course, being the iconic piece of music which all of us hear and instantly go 'Harry Potter' within the first couple of seconds of it playing.
"Its missing the enchanting music too. It only has generic trailer hype music. That was a huge missed opportunity," read a reaction from one disappointed fan.
While a second added: "The problem also comes from the music, it has no positive impact in the trailer and makes the whole thing feel really flat and fade."
Everything we learned from the Harry Potter TV series trailer
Harry shown at Muggle school
We might not have gotten a proper view of the iconic platform nine-and-three-quarters during the trailer, but one of the key details we did get a look at is Harry at a Muggle school, giving fans a glimpse into previously unseen parts of his childhood.

Harry and Hagrid take the London underground
The 2001 movie doesn't really delve into how Harry and Hagrid actually got around London for their shopping trip to Diagon Alley, but the new trailer gave us a peek at the pair hopping on the underground.

A good look at Hogwarts in unexpected detail
The trailer also gave fans a good look at Hogwarts, the sorting hat and even Ollivander as well as a first look at Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia (Daniel Rigby and Bel Powley), who are seen taunting Harry, telling him he's 'nothing special'.

The main cast seen in action for the first time
We were finally given our first glimpse of the franchise's most central characters, including the likes of Professor Snape (Paapa Essiedu), Hagrid (Nick Frost), Dumbledore (John Lithgow), Professor McGonagall (Janet McTeer), Draco Malfoy (Lox Pratt), Ron Weasley (Alastair Stout) and Hermione Granger (Arabella Stanton).

Series one will be named after the UK book title
During the trailer, it was confirmed that series one of the HBO show will be called Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone after the franchise's OG book title, much to the delight of all UK Potterheads.

Surprisingly early release date
Having been previously slated for an 'early 2027' release, the trailer confirmed Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone would be premiering 'this Christmas on HBO Max'.
