Jason Momoa portrayed Khal Drogo, who is married to Emilia Clarke's Daenerys Targaryen, in Game of Thrones

Jason Momoa explained why he decided to wear a distinctive bright pink modesty sock when filming a sex scene on Game of Thrones with Emilia Clarke.

The American actor starred in the first season of the iconic fantasy drama series, with a brief cameo in the second outing of the HBO show.

Despite only being in GOT for a relatively small part of the eight seasons, it is an iconic role within the show as Momoa played Daenerys Targaryen's (Clarke) husband, Khal Drogo, after being arranged to marry her by her brother, Viserys Targaryen (Harry Lloyd) to reconquer the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros.

The relationship between the characters is intense, with occasional graphic sex scenes between Drogo and Daenerys filmed as part of the show's first season.

Over time, their marriage becomes one of actual love before Drogo's untimely death as a result of sepsis from a small cut during battle.

While filming those intense sex scenes, Clarke revealed she was left visibly shocked when Momoa opted for a very particular bright pink modesty sock to wear during the scene.

For those unaware, a modesty sock is a pouch for a man's genitalia when filming nude or intimate scenes so that aren't left covering up their privates on set.

Clarke spoke about Momoa's garb during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, where she said: "There was the lovely, erm, the lovely r**e scene early on in season one... so obviously, there's nudity and you kind of have to try to lighten the mood.

"Not only was it a sex scene, it was a violent sex scene, so he decided for one of the scenes... not use a modesty sock, but use a beautiful pink, fluffy sock.

"So, getting that close-up of me looking petrified, just like' I didn't want it to happen, it's huge and it's pink and I don't know what to do!"

But the pink number was chosen by 45-year-old Momoa for a very particular reason.

"I was in Belfast and it's December, and we're going to shoot and it's freezing and I'm the last one at Titanic studios," he said during a Q&A for the show.

"It's cold... and I'm naked and I've got to walk into a room and show my ass and [Emilia] has to be looking at me, so I go in there and was like, 'Make this done... let's roll'.

"And I just wanted to get this done but the thing is, it was the only scene that was supposed to be in the very beginning and it got bumped, it got bumped, it got bumped and finally... I was the first one there, and I was the last f***ing thing to shoot."

He added: "So I stayed there the whole time, but I shot the last scene of the whole thing. And I was like - 'I'm going to have some fun with this'.

"So I went down and bought a little bag of these socks. Some fluffy pink polka dot socks with little animals and I put it in 'appropriate places'.

"I look around and there are these grips walking around everywhere and I'm like - 'Whatever, it's like a locker room. It's all a part of making [Emilia] laugh'.

"I turn around and I'm walking towards her and am just doing ridiculous moves just to make fun of her close-up, and she's trying to hold it together, but she keeps laughing."

Clarke later confessed she couldn't stop laughing on set as a result of the pink number, with the director calling her out on it. Responding, the Me Before You star said: "Jason has a fluffy pink thing on his... penis."
