Although four years have gone by since the last season aired, fans still haven’t given up on the dream of Mindhunter getting a third season.
The crime-thriller series was a huge hit when it dropped on Netflix in 2017.

When season two was released in 2019 and achieved a 99 percent approval score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, few would have guessed that it would be the last batch of episodes.
Fans were given some form of hope when in January 2020, Netflix announced that the potential for a third season was on indefinite hold as co-executive producer David Fincher wanted to pursue other projects, but may 'revisit [the series] in the future'.
So basically, it wasn't a 'never going to happen' but more like 'it could happen, we just don't no when'.
Unfortunately, fans got the dreaded update that no one wanted in February this year when it was confirmed that the show would not return for a third season.

Speaking to French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche in February, Fincher explained that the audience pull simply wasn’t there, which is why the show has been given the axe.
The filmmaker said: “I’m very proud of the first two seasons.
"But it’s a particularly expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we haven’t attracted a large enough audience to justify such and investment.

“I don’t blame them, they took risks to launch the series.”
He continued: “It's a blessing to be able to work with people who are capable of boldness. The day our desires are not the same, we have to be honest about parting ways.”
In case you haven't seen it, the show is based on a true crime book about the FBI’s ‘Elite Serial Crime Unit’ who came up with a psychological profile to help catch serial killers.
Mindhunter was written by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker and featured Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv and Fincher was the most frequent director and de facto showrunner.

Starting in February this year, Mindhunter fans took matters into their own hands and launched a petition on Change.org, urging the creators of the show to bring it back for another season.
At the time of writing, over just under 52,000 people have signed.
“Please believe, even if the numbers didn't add up in season two as they did for the first season, we are still out here waiting faithfully and clamouring for more,” the petition's creator Dawn Bruner wrote. “Please don't let such a brilliant series die because we know, without doubt, this show/series has the potential to be Netflix most successful and popular ever.”

Calls for a new season resurface every few months but it is unlikely the streaming service will reverse its decision to appease Mindhunter fans.
