There’s always plenty to bite into when it comes to a war epic. But what if we told you that a series exists that is inspired by true events, comes from the creators of ‘Peaky Blinders’, uniquely blends comedy and edge of your seat drama, all while never shying away from the atrocities of war?
‘Rogue Heroes’, streaming exclusively on SBS On Demand, is exactly that, and more. But, ‘Rogue Heroes’ adds such a unique tone to a genre you already know and love that it might just be your new favourite show. And, come February 26, the long-awaited second season will finally premiere.
Here’s some context: The show follows David Stirling, played by Connor Swindells, and Lieutenant Paddy Mayne, played by Jack O’Connell, as they form the elite Special Air Services in Cairo during a particularly bleak period of the Second World War in 1941. The first season, available to stream in full on SBS on Demand right now, only has six episodes, but, trust us — there’s plenty to take in. There are captures and rescue missions, there are wins and losses, there are jumps out of planes that go awry and there’s a no-holds-barred approach to the brutality of war.

But, like we said, this isn’t any war drama. Rogue Heroes was created by Steven Knight, who you might know as the genius behind Peaky Blinders. And, if you’ve ever watched that series, you’ll know that Knight is a master of layering grim subject matter with just the perfect amount of humour.
Now, let’s make it clear. Rogue Heroes doesn’t make light of the atrocities of war, but it also never takes itself too seriously. It's a war drama that knows how to have fun, even in the midst of chaos. The dialogue is sharp, the soundtrack is killer, and the action is always cranked up to eleven. It’s truly edge-of-your-seat television — if you don’t believe us, just wait for that Season 1 finale cliffhanger.
You don’t just have to take our word for it either. Fans and critics alike have been absolutely gushing over the series so far — it even has a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It might just be the closest you get to perfect television, so you’ll have to check it out for yourself, right?

So much detail goes into a series of this scale, so Season 2 of ‘Rogue Heroes’ is well worth the wait, but what can you expect? Well, for starters, the gang are leaving North Africa and are thrown right into the trenches of Europe as the war rages on. But, doubts are being cast by the powers that be over whether there’s a future for the SAS in light of the creation of a new unit.
Oh, and you can expect all the action from Season 1 and then some.
Did we mention that this whole series is largely based on a true story? Yep, David Stirling was a real person, he really created the SAS, and the events of the show are inspired by Stirling’s own, real-life experiences. It just makes the story all the more epic, and really raises the stakes.
Rogue Heroes Season 2 episodes will drop weekly on SBS On Demand from February 26. Dive into the jam-packed first season right now on SBS On Demand so you’re all caught up for Season 2 when it drops.
