Warning: the following article contains heavy spoilers for the finale of The Boys season four.
If you’ve read the warning above and continued that means one of two things.
Either you should stop reading right now or you’ve already managed to blitz through the finale of The Boys season four.

If it’s the former, don’t claim you weren’t warned, and if it’s the latter, you surely want to know what on earth that ending was.
As set up throughout the whole of season four, the finale ends with Homelander taking control of the United States.
The ‘President’ declared martial law and handed over control of the country to Homelander who has essentially won.

If that wasn’t enough, as the titular Boys plan to go to ground in the aftermath, various supes are sent after the team, capturing them one by one.
In the end, only Starlight, and a now genocidal Butcher escape.
Essentially, everything is f*cked.

With only one season left of the show, the finale episode supercharges the plot to its conclusion.
Thankfully, we had a chat a few weeks back with the man responsible for putting us through the pain of the scene where Kimiko and Frenchie are separated just after declaring their love for one another: The Boys creator Eric Kripke.
In our exclusive creator with the showrunner, we asked about the final scene and what’s next.

He said: “You know, I think the finale of season four really shows you that we've been planning five years all along, because there's no way a show goes one more season after the events of that finale.
“As far as we're concerned, it's our show's version of the apocalypse.”
Regarding Homelander’s new role puppeting the president, Kripke said: “Homelander gets everything he has wanted from the beginning, which is to completely remake the United States in his image, and according to his whims.
“The boys are at their lowest point, most of them are captured, and we worry for their future.

“I always look at it as of the five seasons, we're kind of at that point, that's sort of the end of the second act of a movie where everyone's really at their low point, and they've all faced their own personal demons.
“Now, they need to really come together in the fifth season and save the world.”
With only one more season to go, all our favourite characters are locked away and various evil supes are united under the banner of Homelander.
The apocalypse of The Boys certainly seems to ring true.
