Fans of actor Willem Dafoe have claimed the star has had to put up with a 'major insult' to his career.
Some actors enjoy great careers littered with stellar performances that deserve the highest possible recognition, only to be frustrated when it appears their moment for recognition has come.
Leonardo DiCaprio was one such actor, gaining meme status on the internet as cursed not to win, until he finally took home the Oscar for his performance in The Revenant.

The actor has become beloved in certain circles on the internet, in no small part because he is part of so many popular memes from the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies.

Taking to Reddit to praise Dafoe, fans of the actor cherished his most critically acclaimed roles and speculated which ones he ought to have won for.
Plenty of commenters thought he should have won the Best Actor Oscar in 2018 for his portrayal of Vincent Van Gogh in At Eternity's Gate.
Rami Malek took home the Oscar that year for playing Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, which many leaving comments thought was not the best performance of the year.
Others thought he should have at least been Oscar nominated for The Lighthouse, while several praised him for The Florida Project where he did pick up a nomination.

Many slated the idea that an actor's reputation played a role in getting the awards nod, with one person writing it was 'shocking' he hadn't won one of the big awards.
However, not everyone agreed that Dafoe was due a big acting award as some people slated the idea that an actor had been 'robbed' based off their strong career.
Just because an actor puts in a string of great performances it doesn't mean that whoever else won the awards in a given year was undeserving.

Others suggested Dafoe didn't need to win a major award for everyone to know how good an actor he is, with one person saying they were a 'great example of how meaningless these awards are'.
More commenters argued that winning a major award requires lots of campaigning and is more of a popularity contest than a judge of who gave the best performance that year.
Dafoe's first Oscar nomination came all the way back in 1986 for his role as Sgt Elias in Platoon, he has picked up four nods over the course of his career but has yet to walk away with a little golden statue.
