Two babies swapped at birth have extraordinary story after parents discovered truth years into their lives

Imagine finding out years later that the child you've been raising isn't biologically yours.

Well, that's exactly what happened to two families in South Africa after a hospital shockingly switched their babies at birth by accident.

Robin was raised by Sandy Dawkins, a single mum struggling to make ends meet, while Gavin was raised by wealthier parent Megs Clinton Parker.

The two boys, unknowingly swapped, grew up in separate homes for years and the families had no idea about the life-changing mistake.

The error was discovered in 1991 after a dispute over Gavin's paternity led to a DNA test that showed Megs was not his birth mother, leading to a check of hospital records that revealed Megs' biological son, Robin, was actually being raised by Sandy.

In 1989, Robin and Gavin were the only two children born in Nigel Hospital in Johannesburg and were accidentally given to the wrong mothers by the nurse.

60 Minutes Australia explains how the boys grew up in dramatically different environments. One family was more affluent, offering their child a life of relative comfort and access to resources. The other struggled financially, raising their child in a far more modest setting.

When the truth came out, both families were faced with an impossible decision. Should they 'swap back' the boys to raise their biological children? Or should they continue life as it was, with the children they had raised and loved for years?

Ultimately, both mothers decided against swapping the boys back.

Robin later expressed his frustration with this decision, describing his life with Sandy as 'not easy' and something he 'wouldn’t wish on his worst enemy'. Reflecting on the difference between his life and Gavin’s, he said, 'He gets things easy'.

Gavin, however, felt differently, saying: "I thank my lucky stars every day would be wrong.

"But at the same time, I was given a life which I’ve now lived and I’m still living, and I don’t regret anything.”

Years after the truth came out, Megs encouraged Robin to move into her home with Gavin, leaving Sandy without a child.

“I just want to know she’s really happy with what she’s achieved,” Sandy said at the time. “She’s ruined people’s lives, there’s just no other way to look at it… she’s ruined mine for starters.”

But living together proved difficult. Robin clashed with Megs’ high expectations, and their home became a 'war zone'. At 18, Robin dropped out of school and left to work in northern South Africa, breaking apart the already fragile family dynamic.

Years later, Robin reconnected with his family, now accompanied by his wife, Liesel, and their son, James. The families are slowly rebuilding their relationships after years of pain and separation.

Looking back, Robin has come to understand the choices his mothers made. “If I was to find out he wasn’t mine, there’s no way I’d give him back,” he admitted.
