Greggs removes much-loved breakfast item, cue heartbreak

Don't worry, it's not the sausage roll or its vegan alternative

Greggs has said goodbye to one of its most loved breakfast foods. And it's safe to say the decision isn't going down well with everyone.

I'm partial to a Greggs. Who isn't? There's a time and a place, for sure. But what Greggs does provide is consistency; you know what you're getting.

Well, it turns out that might not be the case any more for those who like rocking up to the local branch of their Newcastle-based bakery chain - or if you're like me, getting the cheapest option at the motorway service station before being on your way.

Like every fast food outlet, Greggs reviews its menus from time to time. And in doing that in the early months of 2026, the business has said a fond farewell to the Vegan Breakfast Roll. The bacon sandwich is safe. Calm it, carnivores.

Among the premium products on Greggs' investment in to the vegan market, it's no longer available. Which isn't great news to those who don't eat meat but still want variety.

Over on Elon Musk's social media land of X, one customer wrote: "Greggs discontinuing vegan breakfast roll... can this day get any worse?"

Another, who bought a Vegan Breakfast Roll shortly before it went for good, posted a picture of their food, writing: "It’s sad to think that this is probably going to be my last

Greggs vegan breakfast I get to enjoy! The Vegan Breakfast Roll will be missed!"

And a third posted: "This was my favourite vegan product. I used to get loads of donuts for my kids too while there."

Vegan Breakfast Roll is gone - but not forever?

It seems that there is a chance it could come back, much like the fabled McRib over at McDonald's.

On the removal of the breakfast roll, The Sun reported that Greggs said: “On completing our past review, we’ve decided to remove the Vegan Breakfast roll from our range.

"We do regularly look at our range, so we’re keeping up to date with what our customers would like.

"On completing our last review, we’ve made the decision to give these a well-deserved rest."

So you're telling me there's a chance? You tease, Greggs.

Greggs' discontinued menu

Other items to be removed from Greggs' menu include the Chargrill Chicken Oval Bite; a personal favourite for this writer during his university days.

There was also the Spicy Veg Curry Bake; Katsu Chicken Bakes; Ham Salad Baguette; and Vegan Steak Bake.

All memories of a fast food time gone by.
