Wetherspoons worker reveals truth about how breakfast staple is prepared

What did you expect for the price anyway?

A Wetherspoons employee has shocked punters across the country after revealing how one of the pub's breakfast staples is prepared.

Let's face it, no one is heading down to their local Wetherspoons pub and expecting to be served Michelin-quality food.

We're not even expecting fine dining, just a quick meal and pint for a decent price.

And yet people still find themselves stunned to discover what actually happens to our food before it's slapped onto those famous blue-and-white plates.

If you're a 'Spoons regular, you'll certainly be aware by now that most of the food served is often cooked in the microwave, fryer or grill - excluding the pizzas, which are arguably one of the 'freshest items' on the menu.

However, the same cannot be said for the poached eggs you receive on your cooked breakfast or Eggs Benedict - which actually arrive in the kitchen already pre-poached.

This actually makes sense when you think about how perfectly round and uniform every poached egg to have ever come out of a 'Spoons kitchen looks.

The trade secret was shared online by TikTok user @dobbysc00chie back in 2022, who made a viral post detailing the awkward moments when she'd have to explain the pub had sold out of poached eggs.

"Me explaining to a customer that they can't have poached eggs as they're pre-poached and are out of stock," she captioned the video.

"I actually never told customers they were pre-poached, I just flat out said no, or offered fried eggs instead."

As someone who spent their university days working in the local Wetherspoons, I can confirm this piece of information is true.

There is truly nothing more difficult than trying to keep a straight face while explaining to a customer that poached eggs are sold out but they can have either fried or scrambled eggs instead.

Viewer reactions to the video stemmed from completely baffled to horrified, with one person questioning: "How tf do u get pre poached eggs."

"The highlight of working a spoons breakfast shift," another person joked, as someone else revealed they would tell customers 'the poacher is broken' and hope for the best.

The TikToker isn't the only Wetherspoons employee to speak openly about the unfortunate egg cooking process, with Joe Oxley previously telling The Sun that he and his co-workers even nicknamed the microwave 'chef Mike' when it came to heating things up.

Wetherspoons spokesman Eddie Gershon told LADbible: “Wetherspoon uses 100 percent British Lion Brand free range eggs in its breakfasts, including poached eggs.

“The eggs used in our Eggs Benedict, Miners Benedict and Mushroom Benedict are pre-poached to ensure quality and consistency

“More than 1.5 million Benedict meals are served across the pubs each year.”
