When you think of a Michelin restaurant, I can imagine the last word that comes to mind is ‘cheap’. Fancy and expensive are practically synonymous to the majority of us.
But that doesn’t have to be the case, there’s plenty of food spots in the Michelin Guide that can be fairly affordable.
Although, this one is a whole new level as UK’s cheapest Michelin restaurant will be open for diners to eat for as little as £3.50. Yep, cheaper than a meal deal at this point.

And what might be an even bigger shock to some people, this spot is in not-so-cheap London. It will only be for a limited time though, as the popular place is temporarily time travelling back to its old menu prices.
St. JOHN in Smithfield is set to return to its 1994 menu, and prices, to celebrate its 30th birthday.
Restauranteurs Fergus and Trevor met that year when they were introduced by the olive oil man they shared and ‘lunches lead to partnership’.

Now having a number of sites, bakeries and a winery, the original restaurant has one Michelin star for ‘high quality cooking’ so you know it must be pretty decent.
Part of Michelin’s recommendation reads: “There’s no standing on ceremony here at St. JOHN; indeed, very little ceremony at all, and that makes eating here such a joyful experience. As one of the foremost proponents of nose-to-tail cooking, this is the place to try new things, whether that’s bone marrow or ox liver.”
But anyway, onto the cheap food part.
On Instagram, it explained how there was backlash back in the 90s for the likes of ‘Boiled Eggs and Carrots’ at £2.50.
“Those who joined us in our opening weeks will remember such delights as Apricots on Toast at £4, or Grilled Lambs Tongues, Broad Beans & Carrots at £8.80, and think back to when our Roast Bone Marrow and Parsley Salad was £4.20,” it wrote.

“All this, minus the outrage, will be yours once more.”
There’s also the likes of a £3.50 Welsh rarebit and a £4 Eccles Cake with Lancashire cheese.
This special 30th Archival Menu Celebration will run Monday to Friday from 9 to 27 September and bookings opened up yesterday (22 August).
St. JOHN promises that every seating ‘you can expect both beloved classics and delights from the archives, in for form and price that they first appeared to such bafflement and acclaim in 1994’.
