McDonald’s quietly axes ‘healthiest’ menu item in US because nobody is buying it

The McDonald's president said there's simply not enough demand for it

McDonald’s is going to quietly axes its ‘healthiest’ menu item over in the US because nobody is buying it.

Yep, believe it or not, Americans don’t seem to want to eat a ‘healthy’ meal from Maccies.

When you think of the scran across the pond, you might think of things like burgers and fries or chicken strips and giant cups of fizzy drinks. You know, the types of things that probably sell pretty well at McDonald’s.

But while us Brits were absolutely gutted when the fast-food chain cut us off from things like breakfast wraps during the pandemic, the Yanks were not so bothered about one of their discontinued items.

Not something we exactly have much choice of on our menu, McDonald’s in the US took off its salads during the Covid era to speed up its service and adapt itself to a disrupted supply chain.

Oh yeah, the Americans actually had a whole menu of different salads, often loaded up with grilled chicken Newman’s Own dressing.

However, whether all of the US have been missing them or not, they won’t be coming back nationally.

McDonald’s USA president Joe Erlinger spoke to the Wall Street Journal Global Food Forum earlier this week and said that ‘the demand just isn’t there’.

“They’re looking for great french fries, they’re looking for a $5 meal deal, they’re looking for a hot, fresh sandwich, and so that’s what we’re going to continue to provide them,” he explained.

The Maccies big wig isn’t so against salads of course, there just doesn’t seem to be much point in them being offered in the US it seems.

“You know, our founder famously said in 1970, ‘I don't know what people are going to be eating in the year 2000, but we're going to serve more of it than anybody else,” Erlinger continued.

“And so if people really want salads from McDonald's, we will gladly relaunch salads. But what our experience has proven is, that's not what the consumer is looking for from McDonald's.”

Well, next time you’re over in the US thinking of the delicious things you want to try on the Maccies menu, don’t be getting your hopes up for a salad – just in case that’s the type of thing you’d want from there.

Oh, and have no fear though, there still seems to be enough ‘demand’ here in the UK as Side Salad, Grilled Chicken and Crispy Chicken Salads remain on the menu.
