Experts have issued a warning to anyone who is turning it up on Christmas Eve and you’re going to want to know what it’s all about.

It’s the best time of year to be celebrating with your friends and family.

There’s the chilly air, the Christmas lights everywhere and festive music galore.

Obviously, Christmas Eve is the time to get merry before you say Merry Christmas the next morning, and the beverage of choice is an important aspect.

Instead of chugging bloating beer, people tend to opt for something a little lighter, maybe something that’s bubbly and makes you look a little refined before you’re falling over into bushes on the way home.

What drink causes the worst hangovers?

However, that’s exactly what experts are warning you about.

This specific type of bevvy is somewhat of a killer when it comes to hangovers, though.

While it looks posh, tastes semi-posh and makes you oh-so drunk within glasses, it can wreak havoc on your Christmas morning.

That’s right, it’s Prosecco.

This is the type of hangover which will see you pop Paracetamol every four hours, while chugging as much water as you can fit into your body, and yet, it’s not enough to cure you.

The smell of Christmas dinner will have you on your knees gagging down the toilet as you ask yourself why you decided to reach for the second bottle.

Why does Prosecco cause such bad hangovers?

As it turns out, the bubbly is a bit of a problem for our recovery process.

Speaking to Tyla, sommelier and Club Vino founder Marco Castelanelli said: "If you find that you get the worst headache ever after a glass or two of Prosecco, then quite simply, blame it on the bubbles."

He added: "Prosecco and Champagne both contain little pockets of carbon dioxide which change how the alcohol flows through the bloodstream, helping the body to absorb the alcohol faster."

So, if bubbly gets you tipsy far too easily, it’s not because you’re a light weight.

It’s because of the bubbles.

Castelanelli continued: "Once in the bloodstream, the Co2 competes with oxygen - which is why you might feel a little woozy and rather drunk rather quickly, leading to an exaggerated hangover in the form of a pounding head."

How can you overcome the Prosecco hangover?

However, there are ways you can help yourself out.

Either, drink a glass of water in between your glasses of bubbly, or sip your bevvy slowly.

Castelanelli also recommends drinking a large glass of water before you go to bed.

I’m pretty sure this is a staple for nights out.

We all have our own techniques for dealing with a hangover, but according to scientists, you should try a very specific food and drink combo.

A 2019 study by a team at the Institute of Chemical Technology in Mumbai, India said: "A beverage made from a blend of sweet lime, pear, and coconut water could be used to overcome hangover.

"The consumption of this beverage with cheese, cucumber, and tomatoes may further alleviate the hangover symptoms."

Thanks, I’ll order like twelve of them.
