If you've ever come across a random switch, socket or fitting in your home and have absolutely no idea what it's for or how it works, then you're not alone.
And one common culprit is a hidden 'door feature' that has left many people clueless over its purpose.

Do you know what we're talking about?
It's that 'thing' that kind of looks like a spring and it's attached to the skirting board directly behind the door.
Well, people have just discovered what it actually is and what it's used for.
Over on TikTok, Tammy Vega - who goes by @tammyvega05 - explained that her daughter's bedroom door had been continuously closing, which prompted her to tell her daughter that she simply needed to get a door stop for it.

But Tammy was shocked when her daughter explained that the door already had one.
"She goes, 'mum I have a door stop already'," said Tammy, before zooming in on the door stop attached to the skirting board.
Tammy explained that while she had initially thought that the handy feature stopped the door handle from bashing into the wall, turns out it also has another use.

The mum continued: "She had to show me, you just put your foot [on top of the door stop], put the door down and it holds the door in place. Why did I just learn that?"
In the video, Tammy hooks the door stop underneath the bottom of the door to keep it in place.
And it works wonders.

And other TikTokers were shocked by the revelation, with one person commenting: "Not me sitting up looking at my door stopper on my wall, baffled."
Another said: "All those hours in timeout playing with this spring and I never learned that."
While a third added: "I was today years old also!"
A fourth penned: "I question myself as to why I even went to school when I’ve learned so much on TT."
And a fifth wrote: "Wow I just tried it because my door was doing that and I couldn’t find out why, so thanks for your post."

While the original use of the door stopper is to prevent any wall damage, it's pretty cool it can double up to stop the door from swinging closed, too.
Over on the Hiatt Hardware website, the retailer explains: "Spring doorstops use a spring mechanism and a rubber stopper to prevent your doors from knocking into your walls and skirting boards. The spring allows the door to bounce away from the wall when opened."
