The underrated Aussie spots you should make the destination of your summer getaway

Time to relax and unwind.

Summer’s here, and you might be gearing up to travel to the same old holiday destination you’ve done since you were a kid. There’s beauty in tradition, sure, but why not satisfy that itch to spend your summer getaway somewhere new?

And, in Australia, there’s no shortage of hidden paradises. From rugged coastlines to ancient landscapes, these gems can give you the unique experiences and unforgettable memories you deserve this summer. You could go somewhere classic like the Whitsundays or Byron Bay, but taking on a new adventure in an unknown place can help set your summer apart.

Here are some underrated spots for you to make your summer destination this year.

Shelly Beach, New South Wales

Located on the northern coast of New South Wales, Shelly Beach is a beautiful coastal reserve with crystal-clear waters and abundant marine life. It's a popular spot for snorkeling, diving, and swimming. You’re probably going to want to spend your summer days by the beach, so why not head to one that’s a little less busy than Australia’s biggest beaches for your own slice of paradise?

Wineglass Bay, Tasmania

But, if you’re after a beach getaway, you might want to shoot for the stars. Taking the trip to Tasmania’s iconic Wineglass Bay will certainly be worth it. Located on the Freycinet Peninsula, Wineglass Bay really could be one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Its crescent-shaped bay, powdery white sand, and turquoise waters create a stunning visual spectacle.

The Eyre Peninsula, South Australia

This seafood lover's dream offers pristine beaches, abundant marine life, and some of the freshest seafood you'll ever taste. You can kick back, sure, but you can also gear up for a heart-pounding shark cage diving adventure. The Eyre Peninsula is also perfect for a cheeky wine tour, so feel free to visit one of the many cellars.

The Kimberley, Western Australia

Perhaps you’re looking for some real adventure this summer. Look no further than the Kimberley. A remote and rugged region, the Kimberley offers breathtaking landscapes, including towering gorges, cascading waterfalls, and, to help you cool off, those pristine beaches you thought only existed in your dreams.

Lamington National Park, Queensland

Maybe you want to go camping this summer. If that’s the case, you’re going to want to head somewhere that has it all. Look no further than Lamington National Park, just a two-hour drive from Brisbane. Posting up at O’Reilly’s Campground, you can access stunning waterfalls, hiking trails, and really get the chance to reset and refresh — making it a perfect summer escape.
