Terrified tourists forced to disembark from ferry and wade through deep water with luggage over heads

It's not the sort of thing you'd expect from your holiday package

When holidays say you'll need a sense of adventure in the brochure you're probably not thinking about having to wade through neck-deep water just to reach the beach.

However, that's exactly what happened to a group of tourists who were disembarking their ferry to make their way to a beach in Crete.

Images of the group of tourists getting into the sea as they held their belongings over their heads has caused quite the ruckus online.

According to local media, the beauty spot is Balos Beach and there's supposed to be a floating platform coming to the area soon so people can get on and off the ferry without plunging themselves into the water, as per The Greek Reporter.

That platform isn't in place yet, and was thus no help to the group of tourists who were trying to get off their ferry and visit dry land.

Of course, plunging into neck-deep seawater and wading to shore isn't within everyone's capabilities, so some tourists decided to stay on the boat.

A number of holidaymakers have in the past taken to posting about this issue on TripAdvisor, saying it's a lovely part of the world to visit except for having to swim from the boat to reach it.

One review said they had decided to stay on the boat instead of wading through the water and 'leave without all our belongings'.

Someone else said they'd made a second trip to Balos after visiting back in 2021 and were taken aback to learn that the ferry no longer docked there.

Instead, the reviewer complained that he had to 'disembark into deep water' and when he asked about alternatives, he claimed that he was told he could 'get a private boat for £200'.

There had been some local opposition to tourists over the beach, and according to local media, a decision had been made by officials not to have a floating platform in an attempt to try and protect the beach - a decision which has since be reversed, as per The Daily Mail.

It's one of the parts in the world which is clashing up against the high numbers of tourists who come to visit.

While few would argue against the idea that a bunch of people showing up for a good time is a great way to make money, there are a growing number of tourist hotspots which have hit out at the visitors they get.

Over in Spain, some tourists visiting Barcelona recently were sprayed with water pistols by locals as part of a protest movement telling holidaymakers to 'go home'.

There are many complaints that tourists make prices in the area higher for locals and having so many people visiting takes a toll on the area itself.
