Everything to know about airport security rule change if you’re going on holiday this summer

Big changes are afoot - so here's everything you need to know

The future of getting through an airport and to your flight is set to be revolutionised with brand new security rules coming in to play for the summer holiday season.

Millions of Brits will be jetting off over summer months as they prepare to enjoy a break in the sun.

Whether a city break for a few days or two weeks on the Mediterranean coast, most us of will embark on these holidays via a short journey through the skies.

But that experience can often be dampened before it's even started - more than often, thanks to the dreaded airport security queues.

Snaking up and down the room and full of crying toddlers and heavy sighs, queuing for security check really can drag - especially so when people don't pack their bags as they should do.

It's moments like this where the sights and sounds of duty free and bottles of premium spirits for as little as a tenner have never felt so far away.

And issues with this usually boil down to people not following the rules when it comes to the 100ml liquid - but that is about to change.

What's happening to the 100ml liquid rule?

Currently, the rules at all UK airports state that you must not bring liquids of more than 100ml through security in your hand luggage.

What's more, the liquids have to all fit in a 20cm by 20cm clear, plastic bag.

If you don't obey the rule, then expect your bag to be put to one side to be manually checked by a member of security staff, adding on average 30 minutes to your wait and causing more delays for those behind you.

Well, from 1 June, say goodbye to the 100ml cap and the plastic bags.

What will happen from 1 June?

From 1 June, you'll be able to fly from a UK airport with up to two litres in your hand luggage.

It also doesn't have to be put in a clear plastic bag and can be casually scattered through your luggage.

On top of this, you can keep your electronic goods - laptops, iPads - in your bag.

And it's all because of new high tech scanners going live at airports across the UK.

Which airports will have the new scanners? And which won't?

Sadly, only four UK airports are ready to rock and roll from June - so you're in luck if you fly from Teesside, London City, Birmingham and Newcastle airports.

That's it for now, with the government extending a deadline for all UK airports to have the scanners in place until the 2025 summer season.

The likes of Heathrow Airport, Manchester Airport, London Stansted Airport, and East Midlands Airport are also rumoured to have their scanners ready for early next year.

Heathrow declined to comment when approached on its timeframe and Manchester Airport Holdings (MAG) - which runs Manchester, Stansted, and East Midlands - didn't respond.

Will anything actually change?

Some have raised concerns about how effective relaxing the rules will be.

Travellers have taken to social media to point out that regardless of rules in the UK, it requires the hi-tech scanning system to also be implemented in foreign airports to not fall foul of caps on liquid limits.

LADbible understands that while the technology is being rolled out, passengers should come prepared as usual with liquids no more than 100ml unless advised otherwise by their airports.

That's also the case with airports you're travelling back from, as restrictions vary across the globe.

Earlier this month, a Department for Transport spokesperson told LADbible: "The UK is a world leader at rolling out next generation security scanners – making travel easier for passengers, enhancing security further at UK airports and, over time, we expect this technology to be standard for airport security globally.

"Every country has the right to set their own airport security restrictions, and passengers should continue, as they always have, to check the rules of the airports they are travelling to, via and from.”
