Everyone has a different method of making sure their luggage is easily identifiable on an airport baggage carousel.
Some people use vibrant tags with their names and addresses scrawled inside, while many opt to wrap plastic or bits of fabric in a cacophony of colours around their cases.
One crafty jet setter even went as far as to strap a GoPro onto their luggage—talk about inventive!

Because let’s be honest, it really is mortifying hauling a bag off the baggage claim, only to realise it’s actually not yours.
Cue the awkward moment you have to huff, puff, put it back on, and act like it never happened.
To stop this unspeakable act from ever taking place, frequent fliers have also been known to tie a neat, little bow around their handle as a simple identifier.

That way, you can 100 percent make sure it’s your indistinguishable black bag barrelling down the baggage claim, and not your neighbour's.
However, if you’re one of those travellers, then be warned: you need to cut the habit out now.
John, a baggage handler at Dublin Airport, once revealed that tying a ribbon around your bags could do more harm than good.
Because by trying to avoid an excruciating encounter, you could actually stop your bags from making it on the plane all together.

And trust us—there’s nothing worse than getting to your destination without your gear.
Speaking to RSVP Live about why people need to cut out tying ribbons around their luggage handles, John said: "Ribbons people tie onto their suitcases to help identify them can cause issues with the bag being scanned in the baggage hall.

"If the bag can’t be scanned automatically it can end up in manual processing, which could mean your bag doesn’t make it to the flight," he added.

"Take old stickers off the bag, it can cause confusion with the scanning process.”
However, John’s hot tips didn’t stop there.
He advised that anyone who is worried about their suitcase getting damaged should put their wheels up.
The baggage handler also revealed what sweet treat you should never, ever pack in your luggage.

Great British Bake Off hopefuls and those with a penchant for something sugary, listen up: under no circumstances must you bring Marzipan on holiday with you.
This is apparently because the thick paste made from almonds, sugar and eggs, is considered to have the ‘same density’ as some explosives.
So, if you do fail to heed John’s warning, don’t be too surprised if you’re hauled in for further questioning by officials.
Take note: no ribbons and no Marzipan. Happy holidays, guys!
