This Waterford lad wants to become the youngest Irish person to climb Everest

The 20-year-old plans on scaling the world's highest mountain in 2026.

There's nothing better than hearing of Irish people flying the flag all over the world, and this lad is doing Waterford proud. Despite only being 20 years old, Adam Sweeney from Dunmore East has achieved things most of us could only dream of.

He has scaled some of the world's highest and most challenging mountains, in contents as far as South America and Asia. All of this however is a warm up to his ultimate dream of becoming the youngest Irish person to scale Mount Everest.

His most recent accomplishment is an incredible one, having reached the peak of Ama Dablam in the Himalayas. One of the most challenging climbs you could take on, he had to endure temperatures of -30˚C on his journey to the summit 6,812m above sea level.

Led by Jason Black, Adam was one member of a seven-strong team of Irish climbers. It was the first time an all-Irish team has achieved the feat, so all in it was a fantastic achievement by everyone involved.

If you're wondering about the history of Irish climbers scaling Mount Everest, it has been climbed a total of 82 times by Irish people. The first was Dawson Stelfox in 1993, whereas Clare O'Leary was the first Irish woman to achieve the feat in 2004.
