It's not often that you find yourself wishing you could become a piece of hand luggage for a brief moment in time, but when you do, I'd put money on the fact that you're in an airport.

There's something about being stood in a lengthy queue in security and waiting your turn to grab a screening tray which really prompts us to mull over what it's like to be a bit of carry-on going through the baggage scanners.

The sheer boredom and frustration of standing in line for an eternity probably has a lot to do with this, but many travellers just have a burning desire to find out what goes on after placing their belongings on the conveyor belt.

We say a quick goodbye and get patted down ourselves before being reunited once it reaches the other side - but what on earth did our hand luggage experience while heading through the scanner?

Well, wonder no more - as this woman's boyfriend did us all a solid and FaceTimed her while he was making his way through security, going where no human has gone before - AKA, through the baggage scanner in an airport.

Lima (@welcome_to_lima_land) shared the footage of her video call with her fella Jeff, from the US, on TikTok to share their exclusive knowledge with the rest of us inquisitive flyers.

What a nice couple, eh?

Anyway, we finally got a look at what the trays filled with our gadgets, 100ml liquids, jewellery and bags get up to while we're waiting to go through the body scanners or get waved down with a metal detecting wand.

And sadly, it's something of an anti-climax... but at least now we know.

On the bright side, at least there will be no more sleepless nights about airport baggage scanners.

In the clip, Jeff can be seen grinning while on FaceTime to his partner before placing his iPhone into a tray and sending it on it's way through the contraption which X-rays the contents of your belongings.

Although the machine is actually doing a lot of hard work - calculating the mass and density of the contents of your tray while deciphering whether you have got any unlawful objects - it doesn't look that exciting internally.

Lima was essentially just left in darkness while probably experiencing a degree of motion sickness as the phone made it's way along the conveyor belt, although she did make some interesting observations.

Sadly though, the result was a bit of an anti-climax. (Getty Stock Image)

'Cool stars' was one of them, although social media users have since pointed out that this effect was actually the ionising radiation which is used to identify objects which may be hidden by passengers as well as to create images of the luggage.

'Pretty dark' was another note she made, but this was probably to be expected to be honest.

Although the reality of being inside a baggage scanner was a bit of a letdown, the video at least satisfied a lot of our curiosity about it.

One social media user said: "Now we all got the chance to experience this too. Thanks!"

Another wrote: "Things that feel illegal but aren't."

A third pointed out: "Aren’t those stars radiation?"

A fourth sighed: "I thought it would be cooler but at least now I know."

While a fifth commented: "Thank you for your service. Now we can all sleep knowing what it’s like to go through an airport scanner."

Lima captioned the post: "Always wanted to know... I feel radioactive now."

And I think we can all agree with her on that.
