Inmate 'enthusiastically' admits to killing convicted paedophile in prison while he was awaiting sentencing

Inmate 'enthusiastically' admits to killing convicted paedophile in prison while he was awaiting sentencing

When he was prompted to enter a plea, Evan Martin told the judge he was 'very guilty'.

A prisoner has admitted to killing a Perth paedophile who was awaiting sentencing for luring a little girl to his house.

Evan Martin, 42, appeared in Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court via video link from Casuarina Prison on Wednesday (July 19) to enter a plea for the murder of Ashley Bropho.

When he was read his charge and prompted to enter a plea, Martin told the judge he was 'very guilty'.

News Corp revealed the 42-year-old said the phrase 'enthusiastically'.

He then reportedly thanked the judge for his time.

The magistrate, prosecutor and defence discussed a sentencing date and Martin interjected to ask if it could be set 'as early as possible' because that 'would be good' for him.

When they settled on September 28, he said 'thank you, have a nice day'.

On March 9, Bropho was found unresponsive in his cell in Hakea Prison and was unable to be revived.

Martin was charged with murder three weeks later.

The 42-year-old is a stepbrother of Cleo Smith kidnapper Terence Kelly and was awaiting sentencing on charges of indecent dealing with a child under the age of 13 and encouraging a child to engage in sexual acts.

9News reports that in 2022 Bropho abducted a young girl from a Doubleview park in Perth.

Bropho offered the girl a Hungry Jack's burger before taking her back to his house, kissing her and attempting to perform a sex act.

The girl was able to escape when Bropho's carer arrived at the house.

This is not the first time Martin has attacked a sex offender either, according to News Corp.

In 2020, alongside his co-accused Phillip Raymond, he stabbed a 65-year-old paedophile in Acacia Prison who had been convicted of abusing four young girls.

The victim was left with 47 different stab wounds to his face, neck, back, torso, forearm and a broken rib.

According to WA Today, at the trial, Martin told the court the inmate 'deserved it' while Phillips said he was 'remorseful [the victim] didn’t die'.

At the time, Martin was serving time for armed robbery.
